I think getting the 30″ Cinema Display was a mistake. They’re great monitors but most people use them instead of a 2 monitor setup.

I would suggest you return it and get an HD-SDI broadcast monitor instead.

  • You do realise that the DVD will never look as good as your Final Cut Pro edit, don’t you? DVD is a standard definition format – just over 500 lines of resolution. Your footage was shot HD – over 1000 lines of resolutiion. There is no way of getting around this (unless you make a BluRay).

Also if you are viewing the DVD on an HD television the quality can be made worse depending on the upscaling system in the television.

i’d have to go with the Photo Jpeg codec causing the problem too. I’m quite curious to know what made you choose that codec. You have modern machines running modern software but chose a very dated codec.

If you’re worried about drive space I would go with ProRes Proxy or even just DV PAL – both are RT supported codecs.

You will often find that some ‘non’-supported features might work for years and then for almost no reason they might stop working. Like people might edit using USB drives or h.264 codecs with no problems… but as neither of these are supported practices you might find one day they create problems.

In your Video Export settings what is the Field Order set to?

If it is lower change it to upper. If it is upper change it lower.

You say the project is on the XSAN? This is a bit of a no-no. I don’t think it’s the cause of your problems but it could lead to problems further down the line. There is a continuing issue where FCP projects working from XSAN volumes can become corrupt. It’s always a good idea to keep the project local (Desktop or Documents folder). You can set the Autosave Vault to the XSAN but keep the working project local.

It’s not advisable to bring H.264 into Final Cut Pro. A quick internet search or talking to someone who deals with these cameras on a day to day basis would have revealed this.

If you need to preview your footage use Quicktime Player. If you need to edit your footage you need to do a little research.

It doesn’t sound like you have a need for Final Cut Server. FCS is an Asset Management application which it’s main strength is that it allows media to be viewed from different locations. It also has powerful transcoding options which can be helpful if you are converting large amounts of video or creating proxy media for viewing offsite.

It sounds that all you need is a SAN – a centralised RAID which your 4 workstations have access to.

You’ll find that most professionals use 3 monitors.

2 good quality computer monitors (one for your canvas, viewer and timeline and the other for your bins, your effects and maybe other tools you use) and then you have a 3rd monitor which is fed the output of your video card (such as a Kona).

August 16, 2010 at 2:56 pm in reply to: CD ROM format?

It sounds like you need someone who knows Adobe Director. This is an authoring application for these kind of CD-ROMs that were popular about 10-15 years ago.

As for encoding the video I’d go with Mpeg1 at 320×240. Yes, it’s going to look pretty bad but it does seem to be you are catering for people with technology which is 10 years behind. It might not look nice but it will work.
