  • locate corrupt media files?

FCP is definitely not where the answer to this problem lives, but I thought this forum would reach like-minded people with similar issues.

I’m working on a film with a few thousand pieces of media. I’ve got one FCP project that has all the footage organized into bins, and most clips are merged clips consisting of ProRes video, and synced sound. There are no sequences at all. The media lives on an XSAN. This particular project likes to crash – the beach ball pops up and just hangs there. Occasionally it stops, but usually it requires a force quit.

    I have tried:
    – Trashing preferences
    – creating new projects and copying the bins into them
    – unlinking and relinking the media

I suspect there must be something corrupt, but since there are so many media files, I don’t really know where to begin. I’m wondering if anyone knows of a program that will scan a folder for corrupt data and isolate it.

I tried Treasured, but this only does one file at a time.

And if there is a better forum to post this in, please let me know.

    Thanks for reading,
    George

You want the FCS Maintenance Pack. It has a corrupt clip finder. In fact, it has a LOT of great tools for figuring out what is causing problems.

Good news bad news. The good news is that I have ZERO corrupt files.
The bad news is…. now what?

Does FCP have a point at which it will say “hey there are way too many files in your project, of course I’m going to crash on you.” ? I have about 10,000 in my main project, but even when broken in half, the halves behave the same way. Maybe I need to go much smaller. If anyone knows the actual number of files FCP can handle, please advise.

    Thanks again!

10,000? Not too bad. How large is the project? Get Info on the project file and tell us how many MB it is. Anything over 100MB can be problematic.

    29.4 MB
It lives on the XSAN, but I’ve also tried keeping a copy on my local drive. Same result either way.
Oddly, we have larger projects (80MB or so) that are slow to open, but once open seem to work pretty well. The projects have sequences with many many cuts in them.
My footage project has no sequences. Just bins with clips of merged media.

The video is Pro Res…what are the specs on the audio?

You say the project is on the XSAN? This is a bit of a no-no. I don’t think it’s the cause of your problems but it could lead to problems further down the line. There is a continuing issue where FCP projects working from XSAN volumes can become corrupt. It’s always a good idea to keep the project local (Desktop or Documents folder). You can set the Autosave Vault to the XSAN but keep the working project local.
