March 15, 2010 at 11:45 pm in reply to: Workflow and Aspect ratio

[Dave Johnston] “I’d like to use Apple Prores 422, but none of the easy set-ups give me a 16:9 ratio. Pictures go into ioHD 4:3 anamorphically squeezed, and stay that way on the timeline. “

The IoHD is only recording the image as it sees it, and since there is technically no such thing as 16×9 in SD because the image has to be 4:3 to play on a TV set.

you need to manually set up your aspect ratio to do this correctly

However – If I remember correctly the IoHD has an SD to SD aspect ratio like the Kona 3 and LHI does, it would be under the “Format” Tab in the Kona Control panel and it is at the bottom labeled as SD to SD conversion.

If it is there it should allow you to create a proper output to your monitor.

March 15, 2010 at 6:25 pm in reply to: uncompressed 8 bit and apple pro res

[Fadwa Mawaheb] “i have captured my HDCAM tapes using the APPLE PRO RES 422 but when i saw someone else capturing HDCAM tapes with uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2 i was in a shock from the difference in quality.”

HDCam tape is 8bit with 3:1:1 compression on tape.
ProRes in all flavors is 10 bit 4:2:2 when used as a capture codec.

You do not say what computer or how the files were captured, if you captured on low powered computer or as anything other than HD there could be a huge difference in the file quality.

There is also a huge difference between HDCam tapes and HDCamSR tape in quality of the imagery.

It all gets down to how it was recorded.

March 15, 2010 at 1:24 pm in reply to: Do I need ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 HQ?

[walter biscardi] “We priced it out a few months ago. That pretty much made the client decide not to go with a film out. “

My comment had nothing to do with costs, but the penetration of digital projection.

it was more about the facts that film delivery is the norm in europe and most of asia, outside of major cities, digital delivery is non-exisitant in most of the world.

March 14, 2010 at 7:04 pm in reply to: Do I need ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 HQ?

[Arnie Schlissel] “For future reference, you should have made this decision during preproduction. If you don’t have your post frame work mapped out before you start shooting, the odds of actually finishing your film are greatly reduced. “

Excellent point Arnie, thanks for reminding me…

March 14, 2010 at 2:21 pm in reply to: Do I need ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 HQ?

[Angel Nieves] “but not specifically the answer to my question, which involves film transfer as the final product.”

then you did not read all of the forum posts- I answer this question at least once a week.
You gain nothing from using ProRes HQ- you have 8 bit RGB original material.

    FYI-
Unless you are outside the US- I doubt your project will see a film out, unless you already have a production deal.

March 14, 2010 at 2:15 pm in reply to: AJA io hd conversion process

[April Rose] “have an AJA Io HD, connected via BNC connectors to a Sony PVW-2800 Betcam SP, also a Sony DVR-20 D-2 Composite Digital, and an iMac Core i7 processor quad core”

the IoHD is not certified to work on that machine. you cannot have any other storage attached to the imac- the IoHD takes the entire FW bandwidth.

March 13, 2010 at 12:24 pm in reply to: 23.98p via IO HD capture

[Kenny Powerass] “I’m capturing a project today that was shot at 23.98p on a Sony F900. I’m using a Sony JH-3 deck through an IO HD into FCP. The idea is to work in Prores 422.”

    Kenny

The F900 indeed shoots at 1080 23.98sf, The Sony camera format is ALWAYS PsF in post.

Choose the AJa IoHD 1080 23.98sf Apple ProRes 422 setting. However your JH3 Player may need to be setup to allow for 23.98 output.
