The KiPro is a capture device that only records to Apple’s ProRes 422 codec.
The unit does not do software transcodes at all- it ONLY captures a baseband video (HDSDI, HMDI, Component) signal.“Can we plug our xlr mics directly into the ki pro and skip the compression that HDV normally applies to the audio? Does it all stay in sync?” Why would it be out of sync? Audio and Video are recorded simultaneously.

Kind of a odd question -You ALWAYS need to use Tripods that are designed for the working load of the camera and all accessories.
the KiPro and Aja exo skeleton add about 11 pounds of weight, battery another 4lb not counting , rails, mounts, base plate and every thing else you need for your camera now.IF your tripod is not heavy enough to easily hold that much weight I would not recommend using it the flex will show in your images.

The drive modules only have on FW port.

Thanks, What I was meaning to say was:
“I do not recommend using full range over the SMPTE version settings for anything other than frame based workflows, particularly when cutting with FCP, which has a tendency to truncate all video signals into SMPTE space”

a) There is not enough bandwidth on a single link channel to support RGB at more than 8 bit.
b) Most single link content is in Y’Cb’Cr’ (YUV) so it does not fall under the SMPTE RGB spec.
Contrary to Duke’s comment, I do not recommend using full range SMPTE for anything other than a frame based workflow, particularly when cutting with FCP, which has a tendency to truncate all video signals into SMPTE space.

VTR Exchange another free app from AJA that actually has better deck control for capture and playback than FCP does, even supporting highspeed capture from the 5800 and SRW 1 decks.
As for the Frame Rate vs Field Rate- blame Sony, all but the latest decks all still refer to 60i as 29.97.
Note Jef that I am not having any frame rate issues playing back DNX 1080 60i material and all of the devices I have worked with for the past month leading up to NAB supported the DNX files the same as it did ProRes of the same content.

Sorry to mess with your head but Aja TV and VTRX both can playback DNX files with the current drivers (but I have reported issues under 10.6.3).And I promise not to play on your demo machine again….

this usually means you do not have all of the cables connected correctly.HDSDI and HDMI only carry the video signal- The Large black cable that connects the Box to the computer should have the AJA name in the up position when the cable is attached this is the larger cable that looks like it is a DVI cable (but is not)

ProResHQ is overkill for any DSLR footage.
you are starting with highly compressed 8 bit H.264 content.
Standard ProRes is just fine for this workflow.
