So I quickly answered my own question:

Basically, you need to view invisible files, and go to Final Cut Studio Install/Installer/Packages/QuicktimeMPEG2.pkg. I used xMod to allow viewing of invisible files.

So I’m reading through all of this and it looks like I have the same problem as a lot of you. (FCS2 + Leopard was fine, but lost 3rd party MPEG-2 support in MPEGStreamclip when I upgraded to Snow Leopard and FCS3.) Unfortunately, the only real fix seems to be to restore the MPEG-2 component from a backup of Leopard, which I don’t have.

Has anyone figured out where the MPEG-2 component can be found on any of the install disks?

Wow, that’s really helpful to know. Okay, so it can happen on a laptop or an iMac, and it’s not linked to external speakers… I think I’ve only experienced it in FCP 7, but I’m not 100% sure. What version are you using? What type of footage are you working with when it happens? It mostly happens when I’m cutting HDV, but I’m not sure if there’s a correlation.

Yeah, I use Cinema Tools (part of Final Cut Studio, still part of the FCP workflow) to conform to 23.98 when I’m shooting overcranked 60p stuff on my Canon 7D.

Technically, if you disable frame blending and do an exact % speed change, you will have the same frames with no interpolation, I believe, but you’ll almost surely need to render.

FYI, you may not have to convert to ProRes to conform, but it should make your editing faster and require no rendering.

Here’s a question, if anyone can help:

I’ve done multicam on-the-fly cuts before, but for some reason this particular project is giving me trouble. When I hit the number keys to select new angles, the little grey markers appear in the timeline where I’ve made each angle change, just like normal, but when I am finished with the playback, the cuts don’t appear as they normally do! It’s driving me crazy…..
