apple quicktime mpeg-2 playback component is not installed
Posted by Mark Palmos on August 28, 2009 at 11:59 amHi guys,
Not sure if Im going nuts or what, but i seem to remember being able to rip bits of a DVD using mpeg sreamclip, and it would work fine.now it comes with a message saying the mpeg2 component can be purchased at apple.com for £15. Didnt mpeg2 come with quicktime pro?
I am wondering if installing Studio3 came without the pro version of quicktime?
Thanks guys,

August 28, 2009 at 2:03 pmI’ve seen this too. Not in all, but some FCP systems. Even FCS 2 systems.
I have two MacPros both still FCS 2. In one, I can open MPEG-2/VOBs with MPEGStreamclip, in the other, I can’t. In the one I can, the entire OS and FCS was freshly installed recently. In the one that I can’t and which shows this warning, the system has been upgraded over the original.
The one with the ‘DVD-capable’ MPEG Streamclip is a MacPro Quad-core OSX 10.5.6, QT 7.6.2
The one with the ‘DVD-impaired’ MPEG Streamclip is a MacPro 8-core OSX 10.5.7, QT 7.6.2So there’s possibly one combination of OS and QT updates or the order of installing a QT version before/after FCS that breaks MPEG Streamclip’s ability to open MPEG-2.

August 28, 2009 at 2:21 pmHi Neil,
Thanks for the response…When I go to About this Mac > Software, I see Quicktime player v10 and Quicktime player v7.6.3, but no mentiton of “Pro” – when I do a software update, all is up to date.
I am running snow leopard.
SQUARED5 makers of mpegstreamclip say this on their site requirements for mpeg2:
For MPEG-2 playback and conversion, you need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple (https://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2). If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don’t have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple. If you bought an older version of the component, you can update it to the latest version (https://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/update). Note that the MPEG-2 component is neither required nor useful for MPEG-1 or MPEG-4 files. But it is required for VOB files and transport streams, because they are MPEG-2 files.
But that https://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/update page does not offer to update!
I wonder if I should uninstall QT then reinstall it?Cheers

August 28, 2009 at 3:10 pmHi Steve
Thanks for the reply,
I just followed that link, and it explains how to install Optional Instals from the Snow Leopard disk… which I did, and it makes no difference.Strangely, after installing this Quicktime off the Snow Leopard disk, it says I should go to some Apple site to update my software, and links to a page with a 10.5.8 Leopard download!!!??? absolutely weird and a bit shambolic IMO.
Im busy with a huge upload, once that is done I will remove QT and reinstall, see if that fixes anything.

Hi Todd,
when you go to quicktime player>registration, the registration box says Apple Pro Apps User at the bottom.
im pretty sure the mpeg2 license comes with our Pro Apps? No?

August 29, 2009 at 4:53 pmI did the upgrade to Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro, and it removed the QuicktimeMPEG2.component from System/Library/QuickTime (this is from an earlier FCS1 install). I went into my Leopard backup and just copied the component back to the proper location in Snow Leopard and all is well.

August 31, 2009 at 5:00 pmI had the same problem after I upgraded to Snow Leopard – when trying to open a vob in mpeg-streamclip, a message would tell me that the mpeg-2 playback component was missing. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard (no need to install Leopard before), reinstalled FCS 2 and all my programs, what a pain, and now everything works again. Don’t forget to check the ‘Install QuickTime 7’ when installing Snow Leopard.
(By the way, I can’t see the mpeg-2 playback component in the Library, and it wasn’t there neither in Tiger nor in Leopard, what is the exact name and location? Just in case things go wrong again… I don’t feel like starting the whole reinstall process again)

August 31, 2009 at 5:21 pmYes, the MPEG2 component is included with DVD Studio Pro. I believe if you don’t have the component installed, you may run into issues previewing clips in DVD Studio Pro.
