    Dejan,

The QuickTimeMPEG2.component gets installed in the following location:

/System/Library/QuickTime (not to be confused with /Library/QuickTime or ~/Library/QuickTime)

To check your re-installation, just open up the System folder in the root of your hard drive and navigate to the QuickTime folder in the Library folder in there. Be pretty cautious with things in this folder–don’t move anything around without knowing its exact consequences.

That said, I’m debating moving this codec, and other non-standard codecs to either my main user library at ~/Library/QuickTime, or all users /Library/QuickTime. That way, when I do another total system upgrade in the future, this won’t be an issue.

Thanks Mark, I was indeed looking for the component in the wrong place (˜/Library/QuickTime). I should have read your post more carefully!

    Hi guys,

I spoke to Apple UK on Saturday and the support guy confirmed this component has to be purchases separately.

But just a second, didnt I buy that codec/component when I bought FCS2? It seemed to be included with the Suite then, and now it seems to have been taken away and they want us to buy something we already paid for???

Surely this cannot be the case… it would be tantemount to Apple stealing from it’s customers!

In any case, I got the “component” from my laptop which somehow still works. If anyone wants help, email me privately.

    Mark.

I have a similar problem (the same as Mark), I recently did a clean install of my system and deleted my Previous Systems folder. I was looking to extract and convert DVD info to QuickTime with the Mpeg-2 Component using the MPEG stream clip and I got the same message as Mark. I already checked in/Library/QuickTime and I have the QuickTimeMPEG2.component version 6.3 and in the system/library/quicktime I have theQuickTimeMPEG2.component 7.6. I deleted the MPEG 2 component 6.3 and reinstall the MPEG2 7.6 from the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg, and the Installer says “successfully installed” but there’s no sign of the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file in the /Library/QuickTime . And still no ability to play MPEG-2.

So I don’t know what to do

My system is 10.4.11 and I have the Quicktime pro 7.6.4, and final cut pro HD 5

If you have installed Compressor or DVDSTP you don’t need to install any MPEG-2 component.
It doesn’t shows in the Library/QT folder.
just open DVDSTP. It may helps MPGStreamclip to discover the component (that is i don’t know where).
This happens to me with QT Pro some times.
I need to open FC otherwise my Pro options gets grayed.
    Cheers,

So I’m reading through all of this and it looks like I have the same problem as a lot of you. (FCS2 + Leopard was fine, but lost 3rd party MPEG-2 support in MPEGStreamclip when I upgraded to Snow Leopard and FCS3.) Unfortunately, the only real fix seems to be to restore the MPEG-2 component from a backup of Leopard, which I don’t have.

Has anyone figured out where the MPEG-2 component can be found on any of the install disks?

So I quickly answered my own question:

The MPEG Streamclip folks have addressed the problem: https://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

Basically, you need to view invisible files, and go to Final Cut Studio Install/Installer/Packages/QuicktimeMPEG2.pkg. I used xMod to allow viewing of invisible files.

    Hi Garret,
I’m in Leopard and I have not the MPEG-2 Component in the Library/QT folder.
    However I can play MPEG-2.
With FCS2 the component gets installed (from DVDSTP and Compressor) somewhere but not as a separated component. This is why we lost the option to export MPEG-2 from QT.
For me Is very strange that the component is needed again in FCS3.

After about 2 days in the wilderness I finally found an easy solution without having to download the mpeg-2 component from Apple, which I wasn’t convinced would work anyway. I converted the dvd video to .mov using Prism, then Mpeg Steamclip accepted it for converting to PAL and Apple Intermediate codec for Final Cut Express.
