You’re exporting to 1440×1080, but then how are you encoding it to 720×480 MPEG-2 for DVD? Are you using Compressor’s presets? Something else?

When you say you’re playing the footage on various monitors, what is the method? (Is it playing through an AJA/Kona/Matrox style box, is it playing full-screen on your monitor, or are you burning to DVD and playing it on a TV?)

Also, what is your output format? 1080p? 720p?
Are you scaling entirely in FCP? What is the native footage size/codec of the original footage?

And if they have an alpha channel, FCP may not be interpreting them correctly.

Do you mean import into FCP?
it has such a small canvas i cant even see it
Do you mean that the viewer window is small? Do you know that you can adjust the amount of zoom at the top-center of the viewer window?
but when i export it with qt compression i tryed every size there is i get a picture where it is wide screen with an ugly layering so if letters pop up you can see two pairs of them. Like one ontop of other and i hate it any help will be appreciated.
I’m not sure what you’re describing, but maybe you could upload a screen shot or post a link to the ugly video so we can see what you’re describing.
I can tell you that exporting from final cut does not require you to select the individual clips in the timeline. When you have the timeline as the active window and select Export… you will get a file with the full contents of your timeline.
The one exception to this is in/out points on the timeline. If you have those set, only the area between the points will export. By default, however, there are no in/out points.

I’m guessing that your 1440×1080 footage is interlaced HDV, yeah?
Are you creating your text in FCP using the text tool (which creates interlaced text), or are you creating progressive-scan titles in another app? More information about your workflow may be revealing.

My 2 cents: it’s becoming a challenge to educate clients (potential clients) about the value of professional work.
I recently had a bid from a business out of state who wanted me to make a series of TV ads (15 sec, 30 sec, through a 2.5 min web ad). We talked logistics: they needed shots of vehicles driving on the road, they needed dozens of actors on screen, they needed several versions of a script to be developed, etc. When I inquired about their budget, I was thinking that I’d bid around $10,000. They had $1000 available, including my travel expenses.
What do you do with a client like that? Sure, we write them off and hope that they’ll find some high school student to make it and get a shoddy product, but what if he finds a desperate, out-of-work seasoned pro who’s just trying to stay busy and pay the mortgage?
The bottom line is that this industry is suffering from economic depression, and professionals, amateurs and consumers are all developing lots of bad habits that are going to take some unlearning if/when things get better again.

I agree with Ted, though: taking fingers away from the keyboard to position the mouse over the gap… way too time-consuming. Seriously. I like the x-delete combo, personally.

@Libby: I don’t put a broadcast safe filter on every clip, just because of the increased render time if I’m working on something that would need to be rendered (like HDSLR Canon footage in h264), but if the noise happens I at least have a solution that has always worked. If you want to be safe, apply the filter.
@Federico: Glad you’ve been safe so far! For the record, I’ve not used MP3s in FCP for 4-5 years, and it definitely happens with all manner of audio clips: 48 KHZ, 16 bit 24 bit, 44.1, etc….
