Scaling problems
I am trying to finish a showreel of a multi-screen video installation. For the showreel, I have scaled down the six videos to 16 % to make them fit the screen (to give an idea of what the installation will look like). However, this causes the image to pixelate horribly and show horizontal lines. I have read in other threads that you can scale down in Motion, but I don’t know how to do it. The footage is PAL 16:9. Would really appreciate some help.

Not enough info. What codec are you editing?

Also, what is your output format? 1080p? 720p?
Are you scaling entirely in FCP? What is the native footage size/codec of the original footage?

Hi David, it’s DV PAL 48 Khz Anamorphic CCIR 601, one part of the footage was shot as Mini DV 16:9 and the other part as HDV 1080i60 , but I captured it in Final Cut as DV PAL anamorphic (through my SONY A1 camera), to avoid problems with field dominance, downscaling, etc, etc. Perhaps this is part of the problem?

Hi Garret, The output fotmat is 720p. Until now, I’ve been trying to scale it in FCP 7, as I don’t know how to do it in any other program. I’ve tried de-interlacing, resulting in an even greater loss of definition, so I guess it’s not a good option.

You are blowing up DV footage in FC and probably with the default quality setting.
You can not expect too much.
Capture the HDV footage as HDV, and use Compressor to upscale the DV footage.
