If you use a 4-point track, the scale should be adjusted automatically. Look up “Four-corner pinning with match move” in Motion Help.

That’s interesting. I was under the impression that rigging only had value if you were handing a project off to an FCP editor who may not know much (or anything) about Motion, which is something I never have to do.

  • Very nice job. Tutorial please 🙂

  • [Chris Harlan] “Gareth, when people say they are going to jump, it doesn’t generally mean right this second”
The articles and other comments I’ve read have implied very strongly that the writers have made up their minds and are making the move right now, not at some undefined point in the future.

[Peter Gordon] “Is it simply a matter of having six versions of the same video and then masking out around each photograph card”

Yes, pretty much. Place the video in its final position and size and then duplicate it to create six copies. Put each copy in its own group, mask it down and add the white shape behind it so that you build up your final composition. Step a few seconds in (however long you want the actual move to last) and set position and rotation keyframes for all the groups to lock them in their final positions.

Then turn on keyframe recording, step back to the start, select the first group and move it off-screen, rotating it as well. Do the same for the other five, turn off keyframe recording and play.

The key to keeping it simple is to remember to animate the groups, not the individual layers within the groups.

If you get Patrick Sheffield’s book “How To Cheat In Motion” you’ll learn how to create ParticleMetrix-style effects using just Motion’s built-in capabilities.

Never apologise for spelling words correctly 😉

    Hi Jay,

If you want the particles to disappear as they go behind the talent, you have to mask them out somehow. You might have to rotoscope frame-by-frame, or you might be able to animate a rough mask, it all depends on your footage and what you want it to look like.

If you shot your talent against a green screen, you can key out the background and then position them in 3D space in the middle of your particle spiral, so the particles will automatically be obscured as they travel behind them.

I just repositioned both sets to 0 on the Z-plane so that the paint stroke only had to move in X and Y, it didn’t need to move in Z-space.

I had this exact issue a while back – see here:

How to make a paint stroke connect 2 objects in 3D space?

Unfortunately, the bottom line is that paint strokes are 2D. The “local 3D” checkbox simply makes the dabs face the camera, it doesn’t allow you to fully orient the stroke in 3D space.
