What to use rigging for?
Posted by Jay Carr on July 29, 2011 at 5:43 pmThis is just a general question for anyone with Motion 5. What are you using Rigging for? I’m just trying to get a sense of what this new feature can do for my projects… Personally, I haven’t used it yet. Nothing has come up that I thought a parameter grouping would make easier. But I lack experience.
Any thoughts?

July 29, 2011 at 6:26 pmlol, thanks Mark, I bought your book for Motion 4, so I’m sure the Ripple Training is great as well. It’s actually on my list of things to buy on my next paycheck :-).
Anyone who’s not selling something want to respond ;-).

July 30, 2011 at 12:45 pmHi Jay,
I used rigging in the Classic SLR effect I posted on the FCPX Techniques forum: https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/344/1806
When you adjust the focus slider which is part of the rig, you can several parameters at the same time with only one slider.
So pulling the focus slider to the left or to the right causes the underlying image that is covered by the groundglass to become blurred. At the same time the outer ring in the middle shows darker and lighter triangles but remains sharp and the two half circles in the middle move opposite of eachother and get darker on one side.
All of this is done by adding the individual controls for all these parameters to the same rig slider and then set up the snapshots for the slider states.
If you download the effect and open it in Motion 5 you can easily deconstruct the inner workings.Kind regards,

July 30, 2011 at 1:18 pmThat’s interesting. I was under the impression that rigging only had value if you were handing a project off to an FCP editor who may not know much (or anything) about Motion, which is something I never have to do.

July 30, 2011 at 1:29 pmRigging has all kinds of uses. Here I created an animation by rigging a bunch of parameters to a single slider, much as Robert had done.

July 30, 2011 at 3:54 pmHmmm, interesting. I keep wondering if I can use Motions rigging for more traditional rigs. Specifically, I keep thinking I might give a go at making a stick figure that I can animate using the rig. If there are boxes to check things on and off…I might be able to make a walking animation… Who knows? Right? Until you try you just don’t know.
Do you folks think it might be possible to make a stick figure with a few animations that are controlled by check boxes?

July 31, 2011 at 12:36 pmTry it – but apply the stick figure positions to snapshots on a slider widget instead of checkbox widget so that Motion will interpolate between the poses, creating animation.
