  • Assume that it’s been fully cleared with the copyright holders. This is simply a quality issue, not a rights issue.

I was hoping to get some opinions on the quality, but I guess it’s easy enough just to try it and see what happens.

  • [Stephen Smith] “I’m not a 100% sure I understand what your asking”

You’ve pretty much got it, I think. If you consider the lower-case “d” to be a circle with a line next to it, I want the line to look like it’s growing up and up.

Thanks for the Bezier suggestion, I’ll give it a try.

[Jim Johnson] ” I don’t see anything in the Meyers’ tutorial that can’t be done in Motion.”

That’s great, so could you explain how I can turn an image into a luminance matte which I can then apply to a piece of text?

I’d also be grateful for any advice on the best displacement filter to use to get text seeming to flow into and around the textural irregularities in the background layer. I’ve tried Bump Map and Displace, but despite a lot of parameter-tweaking, neither even seems to come close to creating the right sort of effect. Haven’t tried Indent yet.

  • Andrew, you’re a star. You have, indeed, changed my world 🙂

I only wish I really understood how the different transfer modes work. I just tend to cycle through them until I see either the result I want or a result I like.

  • First guess would be that the particle life is set too long.

If that doesn’t help, create a circular image mask of the maximum radius you want the particles to have, and use that to key the background plate back over the particle effect using the same motion track.

  • Thanks Stephen. I tried it, and it’s certainly nearer to what I want, but the soft edge you can get with the Vignette filter isn’t as nice (or as simple) as feathering an image mask.

As to what I’m actually asking – I’ve got a background texture, and I want to vignette it to give it a bit more interest and depth. So I draw an oval mask, apply it to the texture and feather it. Of course, the mask is 100% black apart from the feathered edge, but that’s too much for the look I’m after.

I want to drop the opacity of *just the mask* to about 75%, so I can see the texture coming through the masked area, but here’s the problem: if I adjust the opacity slider of the mask, Motion adjusts the opacity of the texture as well. If I knock the mask opacity down to 75%, the texture opacity goes down to 75% too. This happens even though you specifically select the mask layer.

I guess I’m just surprised that you can’t adjust the opacity of a mask separately from the image you’ve applied that mask to. Motion makes so many complicated things so simple, it’s weird that it makes something so simple so complicated.

Hi Jerome, the easiest way to create the scrolling text is simply to create a new text object and type out the full line of text you want to scroll. You’ll quickly end up typing off the edge of the Canvas, but remember you can see what you’re typing by looking at the box at the bottom of the Text tab in the Inspector.

Then simply apply the Throw behaviour to the text object and experiment to find the right scrolling speed. Once you’ve done that, you’ll just need to adjust the project length to ensure you scroll through the entire text object. Because you can type very long text objects, you may well find that you can fit all the text you need onto one object and you won’t need to loop it.

That’s the text part of the scrolling ticker in a nutshell; the background strap for the ticker can be whatever you want – a shape, a particle effect, a generator, whatever.

I’ve tried film grain. It helps, but it’s still not quite there.

That’s what I wanted to hear. Thanks!

November 9, 2007 at 12:08 pm in reply to: Making NTSC dvd from PAL content

PAL compatibility is not as widespread among DVD players and TVs in the USA as NTSC compatibility is in the UK, so you really need to convert your video to NTSC to ensure that everyone can watch it on any DVD player/TV.

You don’t need to change the region code of your burner. It’s irrelevant.
