[Darin Derstine] “Alternatively, a solution might be with a filter that can affectively simulate a slower shutter speed e.g. 1/30 or 1/60th of a second”

To be blunt, the professional way to do it is as demonstrated in the YouTube clip. If you want to avoid doing it the proper way and find some weird alternative involving simulating different shutter speeds, you’re probably going to be largely on your own 😉

    Hi Darin,

As others have said, what you want to achieve is nothing to do with interlaced or progressive.

Check out this FCP tutorial on YouTube: Blur Face EffectThat’s exactly what you want to do, although you’ll obviously need a different shape than a circle to cover up the licence plates.

  • Yep, everything has a reel number. But would it really make a difference to the consolidation process if it didn’t, given that I’m trying to copy the used media to a new project and delete all the unused stuff? I could understand lack of reel numbers being an issue if you’re planning to delete all the media with the intention of recapturing at a future date if necessary.

  • [Everest Mokaeff] “Export your film from Avid as image sequence (Tifs, for instance). Open it in QT7 and export as ProRess HQ or 4444”

    Cool, thanks.

  • [David Roth Weiss] “That’s a lousy choice”

Not for a straight offline, I’d say. I won’t be compositing any graphics over the top of the footage; the graphics will be full-frame and created separately in Motion as 1080p25 to be inserted into the final relinked cut.

[David Roth Weiss] “I’m not a big fan of offline/online cutting anyway”

Easy to say when you’ve probably got a system that will handle HD without breaking sweat! 🙂 I’m stuck with a 2006 MacBook Pro 2.16GHz maxed out at 2Gb RAM. For my purposes, a DV-quality offline will speed up my workflow enormously.

  • I won’t get ProRes anything, the film is being finished in a Windows Avid. I might actually get it as an AVI, not a QuickTime.

Whatever I get, I need to be able to downconvert it to some other format, ideally DV. Can you point me to any recommended step-by-step guides on downconverting and later relinking in FCP?

If you can’t find a font that works the way you want, simply select the backwards quote marks at the start of the quote and flip them the right way round.

It’s pretty easy. You can do it all with retiming behaviours.

    OK, that’s simple.

Make sure your “Gator Tales” caption is in its own group. Select the group (NOT the caption layer), and at the point where the caption is at its lowest position (i.e. supposedly underwater), draw a rectangle mask around the caption and set it to “Subtract”. Your caption will disappear. When you play the project, though, the caption will move up from behind the mask as if it’s appearing out of the water.

You’ll want to add a bit of feathering to the mask to soften the edge, and then you can think about refining it further with reflections and that sort of thing.
