I can only comment on 1.
Yes, it does 24p now.
The quality is unbelievable. And you’ll have a job getting such great bokeh / shallow DoF on even top cameras.
But it’s hard to use, especially if you have panning shots, or really, any kind of work involving a moving camera or subject matter moving toward/away from the camera. Unless you can afford to ‘pimp it up’ as they say, with loads of custom-made gear that is.
So it might be an idea to describe the kind of things you’ll be filming before a recommended choice can be made.

Canon EOS 60d. Not a full frame sensor though.

I’d recommend the 50mm f1.4.
But, of course, it depends on what you are mainly going to be shooting. -
I agree with what you say other than the bit about how she plays lots of (FaceBook) games. Mostly requiring a mouse!!! To me, this will make the iPad an annoyance.
Re netbooks, the solid state comment is a true one. I (rather extravagantly) put one in the girlfriends netbook and now it runs crazy fast. (It also has 2gig RAM, like I said above).
If she really doesn’t do anything that creates saved files though, then you can get a very small SSD for a netbook.

A netbook may be your best bet.
If it has Windows 7 starter, not if it has vista of any sort on it. The sony viao ones have good screen resolution for a netbook but only if her eyes are still good. Then, of course, you need to spend a day ridding it of all the cr4pware that our beloved Sony insist on adding to it.
Also – you will want to upgrade the ram to 2gig if it (like most) only comes with 1. This will make up for the rather slow Atom processor.
iPads are sexy for sure but, for the money, they’re not much else. You can bet she’ll want a mouse/keyboard eventually. So you’re ending up with a clumsy netbook anyway if you start down that route.

A major difference is the full-size sensor in the 5D. Depending on what you’ll be doing, this can be seen as an advantage or a disadvantage. Most would say it’s an advantage though.

Looking at the specs too, looks like there’s no p formats, only interlaced. So that’s another reason to stick to the DSLR for now. However, this is a good direction to be taking. If a ‘proper’ video camera came out to which I could attach my canon lenses, then I’d rather use that that a SLR for the added controllability.
-
So can you put Canon SLR lenses onto that thing. I can’t see SONY allowing any lenses other than their own to be honest. If I’m wrong though, then it’s certainly very interesting.

Immediate thing that strikes me: For a full-sized sensor.
What is the new Sony camera? I’ll take a look at the specs and see if I can think of anything else.

I have been running Vegas successfully on the SSD though. I figured it’d be good to keep THAT away from the O/S. But if it will truly be better the other way I’ll do it. But so far I’m getting opinions (which I’m grateful for) rather than the reasons behind them.
Maybe I should run some tests both ways and feed back here? I was hoping someone would have a definitive answer and reason though.
Cheers,
Fred
