You might want to try JES Deinterlacer. Just google it. It’s a little program that does format conversions, among other things. And it’s pretty easy to learn.

Since your end product is strictly SD I would go with DVC PRO50 or Apple ProRes.

The only thing from your specs that raises my eyebrow is the version of QT that you’re on. Can you recall when things started going bad? Was it after an update?

You can change your sequence settings to render at 8 bit. That will speed it up a bit. Once the program is final and you’re ready to master. Change your settings back to 10 bit and re-render. That’ll speed up your workflow at least. I use this process when editing at HD PRORES HQ and it’s almost a 3 to 1 render time ratio between the two settings.

Hey David,

I have had a bit of time today, so I thought I’d re-do my old test and see if it still holds true. From what I can tell it still does. I have two short MPEG movies, one using PRO RES HQ 1080i that I exported a QT movie, using current settings (BEST/HIGHEST QUALITY) directly off the timeline. The other using Quicktime Converter – a SD 10Bit Uncompressed. The most noticeable difference is how the graphic looks. Now I know that there are many variables, especially in the encode settings that could render this experiment faulty. All I can do, is assure you that I tried my hardest to make the HD sourced MPEG look as good as it possible could using compressor settings.
I would like to send you the MPEGs, or some screen snaps of them in QT player, but I don’t have your email address.

I would attach them to this post if I it was possible and I knew how to do it.

I don’t have my DSR 11 in front of me but I believe that there is a switch on the back for “auto play” or “looping” that you need to toggle. If it’s not there, check the on screen menus.

Why not just edit off the two external drives all the time. You can take the project to another machine and not have to reconnect. Many projects that I work on must “travel” with me to be finished onsite at the event. A couple days before I fly out. I migrate the project to the external drives using the Media Manager and off I go. In your case, just get everything reconnected to the esternal drives and then hoof them back and forth. If you designate these drives to hold your renders then you won’t lose those either.

If you insist, you’ll just have to reconnect the media everytime you move. But if all the media is in the same folder, you just need to re-connect one and make sure the check box about “media in the same relative path” (soemthing like that) is checked and FCP should find all the other missing clips. Renders, however will be lost.
