Awfully nice, Jon, 2-1/2 inch hard drives to give speed without excess power, but where`s the gigabit networking hookup to run it on a MacBook Pro practically?

Do you really want the rest of us paupers to drool? I`ve got most of that stuff and no mentionable money. For the money, you could use a set of hard drives and other hardware to “Hackintosh” your AMD, use a second set to Windows your same AMD, and a third set to isoLinuxize, usually Ubuntuize a suite. Crank out the usual sandpaper- quality shows out of the first one you get going, and save money for the Mac Pro, even if the AMD Hackintoshes well. Could means no guarantee. If you get a software shutdown, it`s usually rejected hardware like unsupported audio or video cards, or an adjustment.

Bob`s well deserved favorite answer (He came up with it.) is that the sensible way to hitch Dobbin Horse to the wagon is to use a gigabit networking hookup between the MacBook and an external hard drive set, in this case, you wanting a Raid 0 setup. When you then hook the same hard drives set to your main Mac, you might or might not use the same cable as available or convenient. Using the Firewire 800 port on your MacBook is not a good idea as while the external hard drives will work into the MacBook just fine, you`ll have no Firewire 800 or other good port left to exchange high speed juice such as a camera input. You`ll have taken the creative part out of the creative cow, you. Your software for both preparing the internal boot drive, and Raid setting up of the external work space boosters of either Mac is the OS X install disk. Putting Final Cut Pro or similar software suites with the destination of the Raid set is my own way of making sure that work data goes directly to the Raid set.
-And did I notice that you said that you`d like to migrate the data from the Raid boosted set of the MacBook into a second boosted, boosted Raid box on the Mac Pro? This works fine. Earliest posts on this Forum as well as later ones, tell users that the Apple Raid Card is practical and reliable for no uses at all, not even running hard drives with Raid turned off. Good card choices are already inhabiting your computer display. Your same Raid card on the Mac Pro is likely to prepare, format, and work, tape backup, restore, drives if wanted. -

Mel, just be sure you don`t, EVER, put a production computer you expect to handle many terabytes of shows, nor merely a few tv dvds or radio shows, onlined to the internet. I usually don`t use Windows for tv production, either. By the way, which is the latest LTO type which can be outfitted to SCSI? Is it LTO4 or is it LTO5? Fred -
It sounds like Joel just dashed your hope with a correct answer but I think there`s an area to add for success. Why not try tossing in an nVidia NV-7000 or `7100 64 MB video display card into an unused pci slot for your extra desktop without worrying about or removing the momentarily unused AJA card?

by Joel Hufford on Sep 21, 2010 at 6:40:24 pmI know that the functionality is there for the Kona LHe card using the AJA ControlPanel if you install the correct drivers. However, the only time I did this on my machine (Mac Pro Core2Duo, OSX 10.5) it disabled Quartz Extreme on my other video card.
Not sure if you would experience this same issue on your setup, but the only way I found to re-enable Quartz Extreme on my ATI card was to re-install the version of the AJA Drivers with the Macintosh Desktop Display Disabled. AJA calls these the NDD Drivers.

Joel, not to cut down next answers like Bob`s at all but I thought I`d push in some quick themes.
1. Three backups? Oh by the way, three people? At least three recorder- players of the backup material, preferrably with a spare, and likely at least a knick- knack spare of the same for special purposes like testing, files renaming, or formatting. In other words, stuff that gets in the way, is special. Backup type should be in different form of storage than what you`re rolling, which is usually hard drives.
2. (Gary and I are headaching this one on the ARRI forum right now as we type): Put a booster processor right inside the backup system so that beast, and things that go along with it like visible electricity, turn on and off right with the backup system, leaving the regular sized works regular.
3. Build more backup and horsepower than you need and throttle down. I like variable speed equipment if possible.
4. Adding new workers to a fallen behind project will always make it drag even more.
5. All that increased rug dust will really beat a path to your machines, watch out!
6. My own theory, get home from work as soon as possible so you`ll have 13 hours to wind down and play, sleep (?), then get to work first, to be the morning hero at work. Guess when they`ll need you most.
