When you get or make audio cables for the Alexa always make them Y- cables so that you can run an audio pickoff to your oscilloscope. One thing we don`t need is brand- new Alexa Directors who don`t know how to make good audio. I don`t want to be needed THAT badly to fix things. Fred Jodry.

Chuck, you buy your electricity from the Niagara Falls Project where the ever- increasing electricity prices are like Yeecheeeeecheahowwwwwwwwwwie! A little careful picking of processors and other equipment will keep you from running across electric bills that are unswallowable. Ask as a Guest or join, https://WWW.CPU-WORLD.COM. They`ll happily provide you with an answer, whether you look it up in their tables or ask them, on your Nehalem or Westmere or other processor or processors. Also you might ask a couple of other local to you successful businesses like, Pat McGowan`s InMotionDigitalTV what tunes them up. I already said that I consider SSD RAID work drives and unplanned custom software (and hardware) to be your real needs. I don`t know the finest details of processors but do know that,
1. Landing a gourmet motherboard that has adjustable (downward) processor core multiplier, adjustable (upward) frequency bus, and adjustable (downward) processor core voltage, with an onboard 3 sockets audio with a low number (ALC655, 660, or 662, etc) or USB audio gets really reliable and groovy.
2. Processors should have tons of L2 cache.
So if there`s no way you can afford SSD RAID (0!) work drives and a backup, restore system that`s good enough, a RAID (5?) 2-1/2 inch drives system will still have some resemblance of performance. 3-1/2 inch drives are out of the question . A single IBM/ Hitachi 2-1/2 inch sata notebook drive is ridiculously easy and worthwhile as a boot drive (and a spare sits in a padded box on the shelf). If you need more money, cut down on your partner`s plans on his mere graphics and web computer. -

If you bring home an electrically right, mechanically wrong item from the guitar store just take it to your cellar workshop and turn it into what you need.

1. Ramping up your hardware to make double copies of the DVDs might be part of your next solution.
2. Your RAID 0 you are using now already gives you no protection from a big data crash. A bigger RAID 0 would lead to a bigger crash when the time comes. How about planning on a relatively small RAID 1 or 5 you can assemble yourself (buy the insides but use a dead computer`s case for the box).
3. This topic hosted by Bob Zelin`s name, and a lot of exchanges with John Heagy`s name, will net you plenty of answers awaiting pencil and paper. The exchanges though, are spread over almost a year`s time.
4. I don`t know how fast this backup works, but you might plan for and ask -here- if buying a few DAT24 scsi backup tape outfits, then buy “DAT24” (60 minutes = 8 GB, or 90 minutes = 12 GB) tapes from http://www.tapeonline.com, seen right above where you are reading or typing right now, is the backup portion`s answer. I haven`t seen any previous discussions of DAT24. -
Pat, if you want to make an expensive camera and the rest, look like perfect junk then use crude batteries. Otherwise, buying lots of regular NP-4 nickel- cadmium cells from Eveready or several other manufacturers, several of them located in Ohio, and electrically weld on contact straps until you make just what you need, is common, small, and easy. Nickel- iron, Edison 1.2 volts wet cells are wonderful in studios and semi- portables, and come as or can be made as any size you could ever imagine. Safer and a little more power than boat or airplane sulphuric acid batteries. “Silver” (quotes or not) cells are expensive but just amazingly powerful for highly portable applications. Just drive to the model boats hobby shop and the stuff is already there. Fred Jodry

That`s the kind of answer I was hoping no one would be foolish enough to write. I couldn`t care less if my customers found platters coasters amusing. Those who throw out hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars worth of equipment they don`t know what to do with should realize that the real problem is usually that they threw out a few long suffering employees to save maybe a few tens of thousands of dollars. Awfully foolish if you ask me.

Malcolm, I wouldn`t be so glum for no, no, beneficial reason. Time to patch the bottom hole, get the circuit diagram, and fix the circuit board. Then sweep the metal splinters out of the camera box and reässemble it back into a, the, camera. Why be so glum about your tools that you use for a living? To compare, you don`t take care of diapers with a heavy brow. They`re done and flying on the clothes line.

Since you are doing compressing, uncompression/ extraction, and, other renders and conversions endlessly, the data you are making straddles across hard drive sectors just endlessly much of the time and changes size alot. You are a prime candidate to install a nice hard drives RAID card in your new computer and drop a good SSD not magnetic hard drive on every “hook” you can. (Boot drive by itself, SSD work drives on the RAID). Since the size of these drives at affordable cash is small, you`ll need a backup(, restore) set of hardware too. It`s the compression. Save money for unexpected deluxe software too. More fast cores (12 not 8) is more fast cores but what I just mentioned is needed more.

The electromagnets recording to the spinning magnetic discs are calibrated with what drives them to have enough magnetic power to barely overcome the magnetic hysterysis of whatever was previously there. Usually, magnetic heads on the arms get their gap smeared with use and need a little bit more power. Increasing the voltage to the drives a little is a typical help with age, or heating the top side of the hard drive lowers the hysterysis and accomplishes the practical same. This matter is usually overruled by the next two rules.
2. Playback of what`s magnetically there at the heads and the discs favors lower temperature while, whether the playback amplifiers want higher voltage, lower voltage, or the same voltage as standard, is unknown. Aim a fan at the circuit card if in doubt.
3. This is the strongest rule. The various servos that center the arms on the recording tracks and spin the motor at the right speed, all want to see the centered calibrated voltages supplied. Only age drift changes this a bit.
(Electronic moral: Supplying the original voltages is best. Swapping power supplies and measuring the exact (2) voltages, is a practical way to try subtle sensible voltage differences. Lately I changed a power supply on my new computer because I guessed that the power supply was drooping low on the hard drive and giving a message, “SMART monitoring has determined that your drive is failing. Replace it soon.” I replaced the power supply, and won. Fred Jodry
