Alright Scott, I was listing some patches to your iMac. If you`re getting an Intel Mac then some of this will get passed by. A tower is better than a one piece iMac or notebook unless your editor doubles as the camera`s computer on batteries at the football stadium.

I know neither the formal names and terms nor the regular procedures of network area storage but the above is what you do, aim for. Keep asking but remember to share your successes and failures in the forum later. Jump into the Storage area network topic, and so on.
Hint, there`s an exchange right in this OSX topic on Jan 29 between Rich (Rushbaum?) I forget, and Bob Zelin. Bob examples a Small Tree card that fixes a network bridging problem. Sometimes buying a particular piece of hardware opens up firmware, hardware, or software solutions that automatically set to your needs. I`d guess that the Small Tree might be part of shared storage and not necessarily to your needs but your answer might look about like that. -
Walter (and Scott), that problem is Shared Storage.
To prevent this, configure your network cabled hard drive(s) array to be optimized and I`d suppose, “your own”. I mean using a network port as just a high bandwidth port. -
Scott, since you have a new iMac (not an old one?) it should have a gigabyte? gigabit? network connector built into it just like a new Macbook. Run don`t walk to Bob Zelin and the Arrays and Raid topic (or same here?) for advice typically on external hard drives on the giganetwork while the capture/ edit card usually fires up on the firewire. Things won`t be too slow while waiting for the Intel Mac. Also keeps the old one useful for second jobs.

It`s easy to make one.
1. Rods, sleeves on them, and thumb screws: Look in your scrap box.
2. Bellows: Agfa or Bogen regular big square one. $50.
3. Front shroud (since rectangular not round or square):
Black metal or shellacked manila sheet glued on the front and with lamp black or tar. The hard part is working in lens cables.
4. Additional miniature screws and nuts: From machine shop, or Gun Smith, or Watch Repairman, or saw, make, them right out of a dead hard drive. -
Bear in mind it`s always curious just how many f stops or how much log of greyscale brightness is described by the 12 or 14 or so- on bits as it is in the camera, as it is in the encoding and it`s (matching?) decoding and as it is in or on the display, on the display being of course, projection, compared to direct lighting. Wanted curves or unwanted distortions can come in from almost anywhere. Subtle is subtle, wide scale is not as subtle. And when tolerances of binary digital to analog or analog to digital converters gets poor enough to get noticeable, hold on to your hat. Minor noise or nice greyscales can turn into digital sandpaper. Fortunately these problems should be more likely to go on the Fritz on your everyday sound card (unless the camera men keep bringing back tests undermodulating the video every time with light you can hardly see your hand with). Do I have to remind the guys, for their good habits, that the definition of an ASA speed is the, full therefore maximum, amount of light needed to produce best results?

Matt, years ago I bought a Harvy Wells Bandmaster TBS-50A transmitter at a flea market. – Opened the cabinet. A little 807 beam tetrode modulated by 6L6Gs. – Built a 75 watt power supply for it. Smoked the power supply in 5 minutes. It wasn`t 75 watts. Built other bigger power supplies. The TBS-50A continued to melt down power supplies for the next couple of nights with collosal plate currents like the little UX-210 tube that COULD. I built a power supply with a Dumont TV transformer. That one survived almost a whole evenning, almost. I next built a power supply with a transformer from a Philco console radio. It held up.
Moral, if the power supply can`t push it, believe it. (Yes, measuring voltages helps). Fred Jodry
