Activity Forums AJA Video Systems Kona Lhi no communication

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro:

    6-Core Intel Xeon
    2.66 GHz
2 Processors 12 GB of memory

It’s loaded with FCP 7.0.3 and all drivers are updated.
I added a Kona LHi card and all drivers are updated.

I want to ingest PAL video from my Sony DNW A25 SX deck.
SDI out on the deck to SDI in on the card gives me the A/V but
I have no device control and no timecode coming across.
In the FCP Log and Capture window, it reads “No Communication”.

The supplied cable with the Sony RS 422 lead is connected and yes,
    the deck is in remote.

All capture presets are correct (AJA Kona LHi Sony 25).

    In troubleshooting I have swapped decks, which can control each other;
AJA has sent me a new card and a new cable and I’ve poked every other
button in every thinkable combination, but no luck.

And yes, the cable is attached right side up.

    Thanks,

    Brian

stop testing with Final Cut Pro. Go to the AJA site, under support and download AJA VTR XChange, and continue all of your VTR control tests with VTR XChange. This will tell you if you have a card or cable problem – OR a problem with FCP (which could mean trashing both FCP and AJA preferences, and reloading drivers from scratch, meaning uninstall, and reinstall).

What is your device control preset setting?

For device control, I was advised to use AJA Kona LHi 25 Sony VTR.
But you know how it goes, you start trying all presets that look reasonable.
    No luck.

I tried VTR exchange and I get the same results; A/V comes across but I get a get a
No VTR Connected warning, telling me I should choose the correct serial port.

So what’s next, uninstall and reinstall FCP? (Already did that with the Kona Drivers).

    Thanks guys,

    Brian

I can give you a long winded answer. Assuming that your VTR works, and that you are DIRECTLY CONNECTING TO YOUR LHi (no LHi breakout box from AJA, no patch bays, no RS422 extenders or adaptors), and you are using the BREAKOUT OCTOPUS CABLE that AJA sent you with the Kona LHi, this is what I would do (and if AJA sent you two cards, and they are both “dead”, then this will work) –

    you will hate this –

get a cheap SATA drive from your local office storage, and stick it into your MAC Pro. Load MAC OS-X Snow Leopard onto this drive (it will take under 1 hour, and you have already wasted days on this).
Update your Snow Leopard to OS-X 10.6.6. Download AJA VTR XChange on your new hard drive, AND NOTHING ELSE. I bet you 100 bucks you now have VTR control.

My guess, second guess, is that another Sony power supply is no longer with us.
