For any who deal with the same situation – I found the solution to the issue.
By linking the picture and audio in the timeline and dragging the file to a bin final cut was creating the association between these two files and when another system would open up the sequence it would view the files in the sequence as this file now in a bin rather than as separate picture and audio. It however would not have all of the correct information so when it was relinked it would oftentimes rename the clip in the timeline to whatever was relinked first so at times the clips would be named after the .wav file at other times the renamed picture file.
As far as the audio rate issue, like many before me, a system was not created with the proper easy setup and therefore was relinking with a different frame rate and throwing things out of sync.
Here is the only question I still have. If the first 4 days of production the audio was imported at the incorrect frame rate but the clips have been put into sync with the new “adjusted” in and out points, is there going to be an issue when we do exports for the sound department later? It’s only 4 days worth of dailies to resync, but if I don’t have to do the work, I’d rather not.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for the speedy response Michael. I’m going to have the conversation about the need for a less compressed master file today and I’ll be sure to mention the KiPro. Unfortunately for me, they are beginning to shoot in a few days and the Gemini isn’t available yet.
And even though the online is a much bigger deal, if you have any recommendations on the stability of the XDCAM EX codec quicktime files for offline editing, I’d appreciate any thoughts as they are making hard drive decisions and the total space needed and workflow is something we need to nail down.

Hey Daniel,
Thanks for the response. It looks like we figured out what works best for us.
I would prefer to do use DVD studio pro as well but because there is a parade of people making these DVDs here, dragging and dropping single files into Toast has proved the least problematic (that’s why we’ve found ourselves using the program)
The issue was with the re-encode in toast and that was a setting which had to be changed to never re-encode. Now it is able to recognize the .mt2 mpeg-2 files and multiplex them instead of attempting to re-encode them (if you place the 2 separate .m2v and .ac3 files from compressor the program automatically recognizes it doesn’t need to re-encode which is what was throwing us off).
If anyone finds themselves in this bizarre workflow, hopefully this can help.

June 13, 2009 at 1:56 am in reply to: Poster Frame and Trim Mode not working properly with post-synced clipsHey David,
Same problem here with the trim tool on Prores clips with separate picture and sound.
Anyone with any thoughts/solutions to the issue?

Thanks for the response. I have used the merged clip function before. Here the problem is that the original file contains audio and when you merge the original quicktime and the audio files it merely adds the new tracks creating a file with way too many tracks.
I could create a video file within FCP without audio prior to merging but it’s something that isn’t wise to do at this point in the workflow. I will use merging more extensively next time for sure.
But the main reason for my post was a problem with the audio and video losing the link between them when a cut is made.
Will the problem I’m having be solved by a merged clip? Or in essence am I merging the clips myself just through a few more steps? Sometimes clips will retain their link when a cut is made – other times they won’t… I have not done the testing to see if there is a pattern at this point.
Any help to prevent this would be appreciated.
