    Hello all,

I’m working in a project in which I have been putting video clips which came into the system with audio in sync with separate audio clips imported as files.

I’ve done this by putting them in sync in the timeline, linking the video and new audio clips and then dragging the linked timeline clip into a bin creating a new master clip (at least that’s my understanding of what I’m creating)

The problem I’m encountering is when I go to edit with that clip and create an edit of the audio but not the picture, only the first half of the audio remains linked to the video. The second half no longer is connected and will not show me by how many frames off it is when I move it.

Is there any way to create a clip from separate video and audio sources that will not have this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

Use the Merge Clips function of FCP. You can do this by in point, out point, timecode, etc. So mark an in on the video @ slate drop, mark an in on the audio when you hear the clap, select the two clips, Merge Clips -> by In point. This creates a new clip with both video and audio in your browser. This is faster than trying to sync in the timeline.

Thanks for the response. I have used the merged clip function before. Here the problem is that the original file contains audio and when you merge the original quicktime and the audio files it merely adds the new tracks creating a file with way too many tracks.

I could create a video file within FCP without audio prior to merging but it’s something that isn’t wise to do at this point in the workflow. I will use merging more extensively next time for sure.

But the main reason for my post was a problem with the audio and video losing the link between them when a cut is made.

Will the problem I’m having be solved by a merged clip? Or in essence am I merging the clips myself just through a few more steps? Sometimes clips will retain their link when a cut is made – other times they won’t… I have not done the testing to see if there is a pattern at this point.

Any help to prevent this would be appreciated.
