It seems strange to hold onto the literal hole punch idea. 1 frame of bars seems better as it’s a no-brainer to create and you don’t have to be of a “certain age” to even understand what they’re talking about.
heh

I understand what you’re saying, but i work with a company that does a lot of online doc content. tons and tons of media working off Xsan with multiple editors. they then reuse edits (not master media) for multiple promo stuff etc for like YEARS after.
A reliable method of consolidation would be good. But maybe it’s kinda here now…
My one minor bone to pick with your perfectly reasonable solution is that I’d prefer not to just “throw money” at the issue by just constantly buying hardrives that i put…where?

I never media manage for editing or an “online”, but archiving I use it all the time.
Final products MUST be media managed not because storage is expensive, but because it doesn’t make sense to leave everything on there. Even if you dump the media, I would never want to re-ingest EVERYTHING.
A robust media manager may not outgrow itself quite yet. Eventually storage will be so cheap, and processors and drives so fast that everyone will edit uncompressed HD. It STILL has to be pared down at the end, no?

July 24, 2009 at 1:10 am in reply to: At this point I wish Apple would sell off “Pro” appsI have to agree that a re-write was/is called for.
They are specifically sexing up snow leopard to run 64 bit apps to take advantage of multiple processors. as in the ones that come in the macpro…which we all buy for FCP.
They have, in fact it was Mr. Jobs himself, indicated that they want developers to leave carbon behind and move to cocoa. 64 bit apps must be written in cocoa.
It’s the reason why Adobe products are still not 64 bit in Mac, but they are in PC.
It stands to reason that they should, IMO, update their most power hungry apps to take advantage of their own move to 64bit.
I gotta say, I’m disappointed.

He’s asking whether or not you can render a sequence (not a compressor render) and the click out to another seq and keep on editing.
I’d love to know if that’s the case as well. I bet no.

i really really agree with you.
i understand their push into the future of re-creating a new post production paradigm (all in one box soup to nuts) that has fully addressed HD, but what about us humps out here doing the day to day? those who are moving those keyframes around one at a time, doing the last minute font change on our titles done in title3d one at a time, etc etc. we ALL know the list.
I’m not saying sweeping unrealistic changes, but the ones we know can be done because the exist on other systems and have for a long time.
oh well. it’s still great.

nobody attacked you. it’s just that nobody agreed with you per se.
meanwhile, everyone here is “bilking” their client and in bed with ‘big brother’. nice. i’m sure that comes from a place of experience.
you don’t need fcp 6/fcs2. your concept of your software value is flawed. it is worth exactly what you bought it for as it will do exactly what you bought it for.
look. filmaking is expensive. to a vast majority of the users on this forum it is a steal compared to years past. the real truth is that FCP5 is cheap, stable and incredible. buggy? not sure what you mean.
you lose nothing. nothing. just edit you doc. you absolutley do not need to upgrade whatsoever. I’m not attacking you in any way, but i would assume you would not know how to make the most out of the major upgrade features anyway. they are complex finishing tools.
if you are, however, proficient in ‘online’ color correction and audio mixing and 3d graphics in motion, then upgrade when you are done with your doc and ready for the polish.
if that still feels expensive, price out what it would cost to farm that part out.

beware.
i have a g5 2.5 dual. i assume that you’re card slot configuration are similar if not the same to mine. 2 of the slots SHARE a bus (or at least share something in terms of bandwidth)and will run only as fast as the slowest card. check the apple site about the pci slot configuration as i can’t remember which slots.
i have the identical setup as in a capture card (fastest slot) a raid card and a FW 800 card. I had to pull the FW 800 card out as it caused the raid card to slow down to a crawl. I did a test as i could not believe what i was reading at the time. my 3 drive raid i set up went from 200MB/s (without fw card in shared slot) down to 46MB/s when i reinstalled said FW card. that’s slower than a ‘normal’ single drive!
it’s crazy that they gave us the slots and then sorta took one away anyway. the new mac pros running pci-xpress have solved the problem or so i’ve read as i have never tinkered with one.
