Where do i get a “white circle” for lip-sync test?
Posted by Mark Linthicum on August 18, 2009 at 4:06 amI am doing a show for PBS and they are asking for a “white circle for lip-sync test”.
Anyone know what this will look like? can I make it in Photoshop?
Thanks, Mark

I’ve never heard of that and I’m very curious to know how a “white circle’ can helps to sync lips.

They’re asking you to put a “2-pop” at the head of your video.
Exactly 2-seconds before the start of your program place one frame of 1khz tone on the audio track a single one-frame small white circle on the video track. You can create the white circle in Photoshop.

They ask for a 400hz pop and a white circle. i know about the Pop and have seen the white circle used before but do not have one to reference. i think they use a device that checks the sync and need something that will be compatible with that device.
“400 Hz audio tone and single frame
of white circle for lip-sync test, followed by 29
frames of silence and absence of white circle.”Thanks, mark

You should ask detailed specs for this circle if tested with some sort of system. Usually pops or pips are used visually on edit.

It’s not rocket science Mark. The white hole used today in video is derived from the simple hole punch in black leader that was used in the days of film editing. Whether it’s checked by man or machine, it makes no difference, it will flash white when the tone beeps. Try the one I made at the following link:

August 18, 2009 at 3:06 pmyeah it’s a “hole punch” like David says. Their copy/instructions are confusing though. It’s not really a LIP-sync test. It just confirms physical sync of the pic and sound.
It seems strange to hold onto the literal hole punch idea. 1 frame of bars seems better as it’s a no-brainer to create and you don’t have to be of a “certain age” to even understand what they’re talking about.
