Hi

Thanks lfor that. As I understand it the FCP (as with Avid) safe areas overcompensate, so you will allways be safe, but actual safe areas allow you to place text a little lower on the screen.
I need to know how low we can go as we are using a lot of split creen editing and graphics.
Also, I have no idea what the tech specs are for american networks. Do you have any experience of UK broadcast?

Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve just checked these models and neither of them have an SDI out. Do you know if they have any particular advantages? Thhe other thing about the M10 is that it offers very poor spool control – though I dont’t know if this down to the small tape format. Any ieas?

This is what we’ve set up for future shows, but this was captured as HDV & edited before we agreed on the DVCPRO HD workflow, and we have another show still on as HDV as well.
The thing I’m not getting is why it still didn’t work when I rerendered it into a DVCPRO HD timeline, which would presumably convert it into true frames.

In the end I tried laying it to tape, recapturing it and encoding the recaptured clip. This has solved the problem, but is a bit of a roundabout and timeconsuming process.

Is there anyone out there that knows why a simple rerender won’t work? I’d be interested to know the technicalities even if there isn’t a solution.

If anyone knows of a simpler/ quicker fix than the layoff & recapture rigmarole I’d love to hear it.

Hi Paul

Every question throws up new dilemmas! I’ve never really had to analize the kit I’m using to quite this level – it’s usually just there ready for me to use. Anyway, here’s a quickfire round:

1. I was thinking of using the legaliser filter within FCP, will this not do the job?

2. Same for the scopes, they seem to work – but are they trustworthy?

3. The Decklink has a function to show interlacing issues on the Cinema display. So far it seems to have successfully displayed interlacing flicker, though there may be issues I am unaware of and not looking out for.

At the moment I am thinking more about whether the Cinema display can be calibrated to accurately display colours and light balance of a video image, so that I can grade by eye. We’re not at the mastering stage yet, so I hadn’t really considered the necessity for monitoring component imputs/ outputs.

Maybe I should pay you a visit!
