    Hi

This is an online question. I am currently onlining on FCP. I do not have a cage, and so need to use title safe guides within FCP. I know that it’s own guides are quite general and not ultimately suitable for broadcast.
I have the Digital Heaven widesafe plugin and was wondering if anyone can vouch that it’s reliable.

We are working 16:9 and protecting for 14:9, we are working in the UK, and it will eventually be for international broadcast.

I’ve had a look at the Channel Four guidelines, and don’t really understand how to process that info into a simple graphical overlay for FCP.

    Cheers

I use them for broadcast. No network has rejected a show yet.

    Hi

Thanks lfor that. As I understand it the FCP (as with Avid) safe areas overcompensate, so you will allways be safe, but actual safe areas allow you to place text a little lower on the screen.
I need to know how low we can go as we are using a lot of split creen editing and graphics.
Also, I have no idea what the tech specs are for american networks. Do you have any experience of UK broadcast?

    Many thanks

    Franco

It differs per network. You need to get the Producer’s Guidebook for the particular network you are delivering to.

    No experience with UK networks.

Again, I just go with FCP’s safe title with all our projects. Easier than figuring it out per network. As for splits and such, we do that all the time here and it hasn’t been much of an issue.

Some networks, like ESPN, have their own specs on where the lower thirds go because they put scores and other info in a crawl along the bottom of the screen. Others have a bug in the lower right corner that they dont want covered by lower thirds, as well. It’s best to get the specs, as these quirks are becoming more prevalent these days.
