Depends. You can upres the timeline via the “conform” command, either by upscaling the footage in software or by making the clips offline and reacquiring into HD. Or you can play out your SD timeline to HD-SDI in realtime with the LHi hardware. Or you can keep your SD source footage and convert what you need into HD later on, saving drive space and render time.

If your source is SD only, then I see no reason to acquire in SD. You still can master to HD with the LHi up-conversion on output if you need to.

Did you upgrade to Snow Leopard, or is this a fresh OS installation? I am asking because it sounds like you have an old QuickTime codec installed which does not work on 10.6, which could be the reason for your crashes. Have a look into your Library->QuickTime folder and look for codecs that sound unfamiliar to you. Move these to the desktop and try again to export something from Media 100.

Hmmm,
jagged edges… this could be either interlacing artifacts or field dominance issues. When you go from Media 100 to iDVD you should do the following (at least for NTSC): MPEG2 used for DVDs is 720*480, while the “normal” video resolution e.g. for the Media 100 i codec or for ProRes is 720*486. So if you want to go to DVD you need to get rid of some lines. Unfortunately iDVD simply scales your video as a full frame without looking at the fields. Th avoid that you should export a DV-Stream from Media 100. Go to the File->Export menu and choose Other->DV Stream. Set the field dominance correctly (I think it is lower field for NTSC DV), Color range to “Computer” and in the options the video format to DV, Interlaced and NTSC. Since DV is as MPEG2 720*480 you will end up with a file with the right dimensions (and also the right colorspace) for iDVD. Burn that and watch your disc on a CRT. This way you can see if your fields are correct.
Regarding the jagged edges in web video: you need to deinterlace your video for distribution on the web. This depends on what program you are using to encode…

this sounds not too good.
First thing I would try is to create a new MacOSX user account and run the software there. Look if you have the same issues there. If not, then it is most likely a userspace issue, like a corrupted preference file somewhere.
Next thing I would do is to take a fresh harddrive (FireWire or internal) and install a fresh copy of OSX, Media 100 and the appropriate Aja drivers to see if you still see the problems. I guess that you run into some sort of conflict with e.g. either a bad driver for something, a QuickTime codec that gives problems or maybe a hardware conflict.
What kind of storage do you use? Is there maybe a newer driver or firmware for your storage card? -

If you acquire using FireWire, you can turn off the Aja card (for video output). Can you acquire then??
