But when comparing a FCP and a Media 100 solution you will most likely need the same performance for the same tasks. If you want to work in SD only, or maybe in compressed HD you probably will be good with the G-raids. If you want uncompressed HD (on FCP or Media 100) you need extremely fast FibreChannel drives. The good thing with Media 100 there is that you can mix different codecs on the same timeline in realtime, which allows a nice HD offline-online workflow. And with a Quad G5 you can even do realtime overlay of clips with moving alpha channel in HD without rendering.

My suggestion would be to render the finished piece through AE to a square pixel 16:9 movie (in whatever resolution you want to end up), and to convert it to MPEG4 then. Support for non-square pixel resolutions is not really reliable between different platforms and media players.

As far as I can see there are two Media 100 platforms, the HDx and the Aja based boards. Both will work with V11 with the new features, like the support for additional codecs. But while they use exactly the same software they have different underlying hardware platforms, which provide different features. E.g. the HDx has SD to HD realtme upconversion which the HDe does not have, but the Aja boards have analog audio outputs which the HDx does not have. Plus, the two hardware platforms work on different PCI subsystems (PCI-X with HDx and PCI Express with the Aja based systems) that are not exchangeable; PCI-X boards won
