April 14, 2008 at 6:23 am in reply to: Any traps in using progressive?

We have done this several times, and I cannot see any traps there. There were some Pre-V12.5 versions where ClipFX would only process half the resolution in progressive, though.
Btw. does your client want to shoot in progressive? If yes, you also could simply drop the progressive shot footage in an interlaced timeline.

[Michael Slowe] “Friends say Sony is blocking the playing of any Blu-Ray burnt disc that is not licenesed by the studios, true or false?”

This is not true. There are already BluRay burner and discs out there, and some software packages to burn to BluRay. I think what they are thinking about is that you can´t replicate BluRay (in larger quantities, let´s say 100 discs) in a professional environment without an AACS license, which is mandatory for replication. Unfortunately the whole AACS process is expensive right now. The studio has to have a license, and each batch of discs needs to have its own AACS code, which is expensive also. Plus, if you do a small revision of your project you need a new AACS code, which costs again.

[matthew Zabel] “Sweet. One question though about HDV in 12.5. I see it says you can ACQUIRE HDV on 12.5 which is cool, but can you EDIT it in native HDV (or is it converted into an SD or HD codec), and when completed can I then output to an HDV deck as native HDV?”

Chances are pretty high that you don´t really want to edit in HDV. This produces a wide range of problems (in e.g. FCP and other apps that supposedly can edit in native HDV). HDV was built as an acquisition format, but the file structure of the HDV stream with the long GOP structure was not thought out for editing. So most of the time editing in HDV is loaded with compromises.
Media 100 did not spend the time on developing an own workflow for editing native HDV files, which bigger companies like Apple and others were not able to manage efficiently. What they are doing is to convert the incoming HDV stream into a supported QuickTime video codec, like ProRes, MJPEG B or uncompressed, which is then used for editing.
Currently you cannot go back to HDV via FireWire from Media 100 (and as I said earlier, you also don´t really want to do that with FCP). There are various reasons why you should not want to go back to HDV, and I think there are simply some limitations on what Apple gives developers to work with regarding the HDV FireWire stream. So while I think there are people who want to go to HDV via FireWire, it is not possible with Media 100 today. But of course you can e.g. use HD component or HD-SDI to record to any deck (as long as it supports HD component or HD-SDI input). Plus, I think file-based workflows (e.g. to BluRay or even to standard 4.7GB DVDs which can play back HD-DVD streams on a HD-DVD player today) will be rapidly growing in the next couple of months.

[brian johnston] “****PLEASE, ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ASSISTANTS WOULD MAKE MANY PEOPLE VERY HAPPY!**** “

Okay, what are the other people 😉

[brian johnston] “3. Media100 claims all these realtime effects now, but they seem to be avoiding me. Even something as simple as a basic dissolve requires the same rendering as the old system. Am I missing something here? Can all these issues be tied together? “

Hmmm, what format (resolution, framerate) are you working in? Since you are saying you have an SD system I guess you are working in PAL or NTSC?
Everything in the timeline that is blue (like the old FastFX) should play in realtime in SD and HD on your system. You can render a dissolve, buy you don´t have to. It should play back without any drop of resolution and/or framerate. When using “render all” they should not get rendered (as long as there are no effects clips above), since there is no need for that.
Plus, as a test you could throw some clips on the V1 to Vx tracks and reduce the opacity of the clips to maybe 50%; they should play back in realtime also for some layers. ColorFX, alpha channels and other effects should be realtime, and I have no idea what you could do to a system to make it non-realtime.

[brian johnston] “2. When I went to create a title/comp clip an error message stating: “

Title Suite is more or less Boris Graffiti, packaged together with Media 100. Graffit and RED can use the GPU (graphics card) to perform quicker previews, and they rely on OpenGL for this. The Radeon HD 2600 is pretty new, and RED/Graffiti is currently not optimized and tested for it (I bet the Boris guys are working on that), so the TitleSuite does not recognize the card as being supported for the fast OpenGL preview. Still it may work for the fast previews, but even if you turn off OpenGL for TitleSuite you still can work with it and it will give you pretty good performance. The OpenGL support is not critical, and most likely it will work with your card. But even if not you still can work without OpenGL and get fast response, especially when only working in SD resolution anyway. If you don´t want to see the warning message you can turn off OpenGL support in the TitleSuite prefs.

[brian johnston] “1. I am having a sync problem (yellow lite in edit suite). There is a constant delay before
system recognizes incoming video when trying to capture. Often times it requires
repeatedly clicking “program” then “capture” before yellow lite goes off and edit suite is
prepared to import video. Media100 has no answers!? “

What kind of deck are you using? How is it hooked up to your system? It sounds like you either have a sync problem, or your deck is set to E/E and gets a loop signal, therefore giving a bad signal to the Media 100 input. The board then needs some time to reset after the tape starts playing and sending out a valid signal again. Usually you should not have that unless you either use DV/FireWire in or your deck is not set up correctly.

Simply reinstall your current Media 100 software version. I guess there is a conflict with your codecs somewhere.
Do you have the latest version of RED installed? If not, try upgrading to the latest version.

When downloading the trial version you should either have to log on to BorisFX or to provide your email address. You should have gotten an email with the serial number for the trial version if you have set up a valid mail address.

April 10, 2008 at 1:35 pm in reply to: Io HD AJA

From what I understand I think the IoHD would be an interesting option for Media 100. But I am not sure if they are allowed to use it (if they can get access to the drivers necessary to communicate with the device). The press releases for the IoHD as well as for the “old” Io products always sounded like these devices were developed with the help of Apple, and I am not sure that they are as accessible for 3rd party developers as the rest of the Aja product line via the Aja OEM hardware&drivers.
Additionally, Media 100 has to evaluate the demand for products. While I think it would be nice to have the IoHD option, e.g. for use with Notebooks, I am not sure how many people would be interested in it, and if the demand would justify the development time and costs. If you are interested in seeing this happen, you should get in contact with the Media 100 product manager and let him know that this is something you would like to see.

[Jim Wilcox] “Seems like it should be E/E through the system. Our HDx box does not have this issue. Am I missing something? “

One more thing: if you acquire something on Aja and on HDx, will there be a difference in levels if you e.g. record the same signal tone? Will the difference be on input or on output (do the meters in the audio mixer read the same numbers or not)?
