Try this for a starting point:

    – Curves (to bring up some blue color)
    – Fast Blur 4 pixels
    – Unsharp Mask: amount150, Radius 6
    – Wave Warp: type=Smooth noise; Wave height=6; ; width=100; direction=0; and a fast Wave speed, Pinning on all edges/
    – Maybe a second Wave Warp with normal noise; and a small height

Wave Warp is pretty slow to render alas.

    You mentioned a colored background.

Is it like 100% red text on a 100% blue background in the DV codec ?

Then that would be your problem: DV is crap at color-contrast, it has half the resolution for defining color, but full resolution for brightness.
That gives very ugly blockyness. Even a bit of blur might not cure it.

check out this tutorial “Great Titles with the DV codec”

If you go to frame 1 then purge the ram, and preview again, do you still get the same results ?
Do all the layers do it or only the ‘followers’ ?

  • a bit Off-topic:
Well, I see how having a widescreen would not help in the framing of your shots,
But I’d just like to point out that in Widescreen PAL, you have more definition than NTSC, and more definitiona than 4:3 if you have the right camera and TV.
My Canon XL2 shows me less ‘image-space’ when I switch to 4:3, but sadly with most cameras it’s indeed the opposite: the top and bottom of a 4:3 CCD get cached instead of the sides of a 16:9.
    Hope I’m not ranting.

BTW: do some test-shots or photos with your helmet by reflecting some lines or gridpatterns on them, so you see how they’re distorted in the reflection.
If you’re just going to make an image of a “landscape on fire”, then cachee it into the little visor-window with a mask, it will look pretty unrealistic without distortion.

I think that’s going to be the main challenge in selling the reflection.

Try to copy some keyframes in AE, then paste them in a text-editor.
Put the two textfiles side by side.
You can figure out pretty easy what the differences are between them and by copying some lines from one to the other and find/replacing some commas etc. you’ll have a text you can copy paste back into AE. with the correct values.

    Just a thought here:

does the clipped Wav still sound stereo ?
Because if both the left and right channel are played in the center instead of through discrete channels, in theory the sound would go up by 3db.

Just maybe, that’s what’s going on there to result in clipping, but it would be a serious bug in either AE or the program you’re using to listen to the WAVs

  • the first line should be:

    dateValue=thisComp.layer("date 2").effect("Numbers")(4); // change the layerName

The name has to be in the brackets and quoted.

Try importing a PSD with a glowed layer, then save the layer that has the glow on it as an Animation Preset.
There’s no other way, as they’re not listed in the effects.

It’s worth noting that the AE-variety has less possibilities than the PS one, for instance there’s no precise vs soft setting, or strength:
in AE it’s just a colored in gaussian blurred version of the layer.
