Unfortunately I don’t have the Explosion object or the option to subdivide; I’m using Cinema 4D Lite.
However, I found a workaround: first I rendered the scene with the Explosion FX, and then I rendered the scene again with the Explosion FX disabled. Then I comped these together in AE. Not the ideal workflow – but once again I’m limited by C4D Lite. The end result is exactly what I wanted to achieve, though.

Thank you, Jim! Very good and clear explanation with screenshots.
However, is there any way to avoid this triangulation thing from happening so visibly? I understand that the Explosion FX needs to break the mesh into triangles, but the Explosion FX is kind of useless if the mesh becomes so visibly “distorted”, unless you’re creating an explosion that is so fast that the audience won’t be able to see this triangulation process. I want to use the Explosion FX to create a “slow” explosion, to simulate something that looks like a disintegration effect. I guess that won’t work, apparently…

    Thank you, Robert!

  • Kevin, if you’re uploading the video to YouTube they will re-compress the video and therefore also decide the bit rate for you to make sure it will play smoothly. Upload in the highest quality possible with a high bitrate and let YouTube worry about compatibility and internet speeds.
FYI: For 1080p YouTube usually will re-compress the videos to ≈8 Mbps.

  • You also have the option to upload to YouTube directly from Media Encoder: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/media-encoder/how-to/publish-to-youtube-vimeo.html

  • YouTube always re-compress the files you upload (<4K files will be re-compressed to H.264 and 4K and above files will be re-compressed to VP9). This means that if you upload an already compressed file to YouTube, they will compress it again, which means that you’ll loose some quality. I always upload uncompressed or close-to-uncompressed (lossless) files to YouTube, like Apple ProRes 422 or GoPro CineForm. However, exporting a 32 minute 1080p video will result in a very large file if exporting with codecs like Apple ProRes 422 or GoPro CineForm.

If quality is your number one priority and file size and upload time doesn’t matter, go with codecs like ProRes or CineForm.
If file size and upload time is your number one priority, use H.264 or H.265 and follow YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en

    Good luck!

    Yes, that’s definitely a workaround.

However, I strongly believe that Adobe should have an “Include Comment Markers”-option when exporting. A lot of people might not realize that they’re including their Comment Markers when exporting. I understand why Chapter Markers might automatically be included when exporting (since you, for the most part, create Chapter Markers exclusively for the finished file), but comment markers that I consider to mostly be used as sticky notes to yourself or your team during editing? No, thank you.

Thank you, Brian! Apparently I missed the “Render Instances do however have a few drawbacks”-section.
