In regards to Pete’s creating another solid layer…..

Can you use vector paint for this? I tried to make the solid layer invisible but I cannot see what I am painting on the footage layer. Maybe I have the wrong invisible option checked? I clicked the eyeball to the left of the comp name, is this correct?

Should you always use vector paint for really fast moving objects like sports players?

In response to Jim, yes, the height.width and pixel aspect ratio are the same. I think you guys have pointed out the problem which is the way the footage was captured. Thanks for the knowledge on the flicker also, Steve.

I would think you would have to draw a mask around the surfer for each frame or draw a mask using vector paint every frame. There is a tutorial in the tutorial section for after effects on this subject. I would think you could not use the half method for keying out the surfer if he is moving to fast. Then again you might want to try the color key effect on the clip, you might be able to key out the back round that way.

    In response to Steve,

Every I know is self taught, I think I have good knowledge on using NLE’s. I fully understand the use of key frames, masking using Bezier masks, but only until I started using After Effects did I know masking could be done with vector paint. I currently use Vegas 6.0 as an NLE. I really do not understand the

Also, should I be creating .tga files from DV in order to make great masks of sports players or is just masking them in DV just as good?

I have read the tutorial that was posted but this did not solve my problem. I still het the thin black lines on the rendered clip and I tried just about every combination of settings. I have captured this footage from the TV onto a DVD recorder then imported into my PC as an MPEG-2 file.
