I am messing around with the “modes” in After Effects and when I try to switch the mode on a layer, I see no difference in footage I am trying to combine. Why is that? I use Sony Vegas and when I try to combine layers using compositing modes it works fine, please help.

It could be that you’ve accidently double-clicked on the layer you were wanting to change. In which case you won’t see any changes, as the layer pops up in the same window as the composition. It’s caught me out a few times.

No, thats not it. I have made new projects and then imported 2 pieces of video, then changed the blending mode and still no change.
