I’m very curious about this as well, anyone have an answer to this?

New beta version out for the Hyperdeck – https://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail/?sid=3960&pid=3968&os=mac

Probably doesn’t fix the “studio swing” problem.

    Hey Jay,

I’m using the DNxHD MOV version. I do have maximum bit depth & render quality checked in the sequence. Is there somewhere else it needs to be enabled as well?

Thanks again for all your hard work, Jay. This problem has been bothering me weeks.

    Thanks Jay,

That’s hard evidence and very clearly shows the issue.

Tomorrow I will compare the Quicktime uncompressed with the corrected DNxHD and perhaps highlight some of the artifacts or potential clipping. Unless someone has already done that. I’d like to know the severity of the issue before resulting to buying additional SSD dives.

Looks like I’m encountering the same problem in CS5.5. Just to be clear, can I fix this with color correction or is the information being clipped in some way?

    DNxHD (Hyperdeck Shuttle 2)

    AVCHD (straight from camera)

From what I have read and what I have experienced. 4444 from 5DtoRGB is the best quality possible, but the file sizes are nearly unmanageable. 422 HQ from 5DtoRGB and 422 HQ from Compressor are almost 100% identical (5DtoRGB is slightly better at around 400% magnification). But for some reason, this isn’t the case with 4444. Strangely enough 4444 out of 5DtoRGB has a much bigger impact than the other options. Is it overkill? Probably, but for people who obsesses over the absolute best quality you can get, not so much.

As for the gamma shift, something else is going on there and this article might help shed some light on that – https://motionlifemediablog.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/5dtorgb-color-tests/

Ok cool, I think understand now. I guess it takes a lot practice, because I feel like I tracked everything perfectly, but in the end it’s always way off. I’ll keep working at it.

    Mike,

Thank you so much for laying out those tips. I have a quick question. How do you go about drawing axis lines effectively? I can’t seem to grasp where and how I should be placing them…

  • Thanks, I’ve been playing around with this comp for quite awhile… Got this far by deleting the layer controller that comes with the PSD file and using the lookAt(thisComp.activeCamera.position, position) extension to keep the PSD text in 3D during a 360 rotation. The 3D Layer box IS enabled, but the ground plane will not cooperate with the camera… Oh well, it was worth a try -_-

Thanks for the help, I gotta save up some money for Boris.
