Granted, many of you bigger shops have the luxury of logging first, before digitizing. But, I get tapes in the day of an edit that I have never seen. And I have to grab them on the fly.
But, like I said, it would be ‘nice’ to have the option of typing a name of what you see as you see the clip. Can’t be too hard to incorporate as others have (AVID & Media 100)

Yes, I know you can rename afterward, but AVID allows you to type any name in while digitizing. It wastes so much time doing it afterward. Most of the time, you don’t know that the scene is until it starts.

Walter, since you are in the ‘loop’ any talk about allowing naming while digitizing? That’s my number one peeve.

I 2nd the request for a cheaper, less featured DVCProHD playback deck. I’m exactly in the same boat as George. I have held off on buying a 1400 deck because they’re too expensive and have too many features we don’t need. Price it around $11K list, $8K street and you’ll have a winner.

I just re-read the original post. He says “In order to do the final adjustments he just wants to see downconverted SD footage on the timeline”. It sounds like he already does have a timeline finished to do whatever he calls “final adjustments” (Color correction, grahics possibly?)
I understand your answer that if you drag and drop, then you still have all the original footage/bins in it’s original size/aspect and only the timeline resized.
My question was… Is there any benefit to doing it your way Recompressing all the footage vs. drag and drop? Quality difference? Speed for the conversion vs. rendering the SD timeline after dropping the HDV in?

As I read the Panny insert more, it’s just promoting Solid-state and P2, no tape. So, I’m sure that’s the reason for the missing HDX-900.

Here’s a trick I use is when shooting talking heads. Always get some quick B-roll of their hands. You can usually get this when you are setting up or after. Shoot tights of their hands while their talking. I’ve saved my butt many times when I have to cut sound bites together and have no B-roll. Also, shoot some shots of them just sitting there not speaking, you can do some quick flash cuts to give interest and to cover edits.
Here’s some other ideas… Try flops. Flop the scene to have them look the other way at the edit point. Go B&W with grain. (Doing this can cover noise of zooming the shot to avoid a jump-cut).
