    Aaron,
I’m not sure why you are trying to export with the Avid Meridian codec but for the best quality in AE I would suggest using the render queue and outputting a Quicktime movie with the Quicktime Animation codec (set to best quality, of course).

There are plenty of articles on the Cow about outputting, rendering and codecs so check those out. Avid can ingest quicktime movies just fine.

    “im having trouble w/the bkgrd & motion… ”

Love to help but that’s a bit vague.

Maybe try to use distort>offset with a tileable image of whatever background you want. Keyframe your Y offset at the desired speed and turn on motion blur for the layer.

First, you’re in the wrong forum. Search “3GB” in the After Effects forum and you’ll find many articles about this subject.

Sounds like the layer below the solid is soloed. That’s the only thing that I know of that will cause other layers eyeballs to gray out.

July 30, 2008 at 11:11 pm in reply to: Video wont play in intro

It may play in Premiere but does it play in AE?

Try opening the footage by itself by double-clicking it in the project window. If it doesn’t play there then something is screwy with the footage. If that’s the case, then check out the interpret footage dialog by selecting the footage in the project window and hitting ctl+F (cmd+f for mac). Check the duration and see if everything else looks correct.

If the footage does play when you double-click it in the project window then something is screwy with the composition that you are trying to use the footage in. If that’s the case, then check the composition settings by opening the composition and hitting ctl+k (cmd+k for mac). Check the duration of the comp and the frame rate, etc.

July 30, 2008 at 7:47 pm in reply to: “Stencil Alpha” – Not What I Thought

    Try this:
    – Pre-compose your background (everything except the logo) in After Effects so you’re left with the logo layer and the background pre-comp layer.
    – The logo should be on top of the background layer.
    – Set the background layer track matte to “Alpha Inverted”. Now you should have a cutout hole in the background in the shape of the logo and you should see the transparency grid (if not, turn on “show transparency grid).
    – Animate the logo scaling up (use keyframe assistant>exponential scale for best results) to fill the screen.
    – Render it out as a movie with an alpha channel.

You should be able to bring that into FCP and drop it on top of whatever video you want to reveal.

    Hope that helps.

Does the video play elsewhere? Can you open the video in a footage window or another comp and play it?

Also check the comp specs for the intro comp (ctl+k). What’s the duration? Is it one frame long?

July 18, 2008 at 11:41 pm in reply to: Tea & Scones – Invigorator Ideas

I have ProAnimator, not Invigorator, but I believe Invigorator will import .3DS models. Since I assume you don’t have a 3D modeling program you may be able to find a free model that would work for you on one of the many 3D sites such as turbosquid.com.

To make the surface appear rough like a scone you can use a bump map (an image, preferably grayscale, with the texture you want).

As far as the cream goes, I would try to duplicate the scone and scale the copy down so it fits inside of the first scone (or on top of it, or whatever) then color it and apply an appropriate bump map. Leave it hanging out of the first scone a bit and it might appear to be oozing out.

    Hope that helps. Good luck.

April 21, 2008 at 6:44 pm in reply to: AE7 (CS2) crash during render

When does it crash? As soon as you hit render or half-way through?

Check your memory settings in Preferences. Be sure you have Disk Cache checked and specify a folder for it to use, preferably on your media drive. Also, be sure to check Prevent DLL Address Fragmentation (I may have the name wrong for that but it’s something close to that).

Search the archives, there are some articles on the Cow that should help.
