That’s really strange for sure. I’ve had some weird flickering caused by cached frames before but that will usually show up in the RAM previews. It wouldn’t hurt to try purging all of the memory though. Do the Edit>Purge>Image Cache Memory and also in Preferences>Media & Disk Cache hit the “Empty Disk Cache” and the “Clean Database & Cache” buttons and see if that helps.

My first guess is that your background gradient layer is a 3D layer and is in the same Z position as another layer that’s below it in the layer stack. That can cause random flickering like what you’re describing. If so, just separate the layers by a couple of pixels.

Video Copilot’s Element 3D might work for the helicopter but I’m not sure about the train.
However, I would suggest to be careful not to bite off more than you can chew, however tempting it may be. If you deliver a poor product it can haunt you and your career for a long, long time.
If you’re comfortable with AE then maybe find someone to work with who is experienced with 3D and VFX work.

There is also a “Fade In+Out – frames” preset in the “Behaviors” section that fades in and out by however many frames you enter, base on the in and out points of the layer. Harry Frank has a preset called “graymachine auto fade” on his site that uses layer markers to determine the fade duration.

There’s also an “auto lip sync” tool on aescripts that might be useful. I can’t personally vouch for it but it looks promising.

Yes, dynamic link is great and there is no loss of quality. It’s very easy to use as well once you learn how it works. It’s especially useful if you expect to make changes to the AE comps. If you do want to just render out your AE comps and import into Premiere, the Quicktime animation codec is virtually lossless and creates smaller files than totally uncompressed video, plus it supports an alpha channel. It’s what most people use for rendering graphics, including myself.
