That’s an Illustrator term, so are you working with an Illustrator file or a text layer in AE that you used Layer>Create Masks from Text to convert it to mask shapes? That script only works on layers that have masks applied.

For the rotoscoping part, the rotobrush tool and/or mocha would probably be your best bets. There is plenty of info/tutorials on the cow and elsewhere about both of those tools.

It’s hard to say without seeing the project but one thing to check is that the color mode of your illustrator file is set to RGB and not CMYK. If that’s not the issue then maybe post some screen shots of your comps and pre-comps so we can see what’s going on.

That’s great, glad it worked out! I know that’s a horrible feeling when something goes wrong like that when you are that deep into a project.

No, but you could try to trash the preferences file. That fixes a lot of oddball problems with AE.

Yes, it definitely sounds like a RAM problem. I would try reducing the amount of RAM dedicated to AE in the preferences and see if that helps.
