That’s pretty clever. If you’re writing with the Wacom tablet in photoshop you could make your background white and the brush black and then when you bring it into AE set it to multiply mode and it will knock out the white BG. Also, you could use the invert effect to flip the black and white and set it to screen mode. OR use the free Knoll UnMult plug-in, which will remove the black without having to blend with the background layers. Just stick the invert effect in front of the UnMult effect if you need to flip the colors.

One word of warning though, is that you may run into some weird behavior or bugginess in AE if you use a highly compressed video format, which most screen capture apps do use. I would bring the movie into AE, precomp it and set the size so it crops out the parts you don’t need, then render to a quicktime animation or PNG sequence and use that in your project and not the compressed format.

Be sure the “from current time” option in the preview panel is unchecked or it will ignore the work area you’ve set. HTH

I would suggest pre-comping the images of your head in a loopable sequence and render it out as a movie. Then import the movie into your project and set the “interpret footage” option to loop a bunch of times. That way you can just drop that movie into your timeline and animate the position and use time remapping to control the speed of the head rolling. I assume you shot your head on a green screen and are able to key it? How many images of your head did you take BTW?

Shape layers would probably be your best bet, but I don’t know what you’re doing so it’s hard to say.

  • Just make the f-curve for your animation match the graph you posted. You can do it in the graph editor or set your first keyframe to ease out, alt + double-click it and enter a value of around 60-100 for the outgoing influence.

Maybe you could auto-trace the shape layer? Not sure if that would work for what you are doing but worth a try.

Here’s a script that will convert the shape layer to a mask.

Here’s a tutorial about making the fractal noise look like liquid that might help.

  • Do you have any layer styles applied to the text? If so, delete them (don’t just turn them off) and see if the problem is still there. Layer styles can cause all kinds of weird glitches with 3D animations.
