  • PF Track is pretty awesome. I don’t know of anything else that can do what it can do so yeah, that’s probably you’re best bet. I have the basic PF Hoe tracking app and it works well but it only does camera tracking, not objects.

I would guess that you would have to have dots or at least something on your clay figures for it to track because the clay alone is just too featureless for it to grab on to.

You may also want to check out Mocha for some of the simpler effects because it’s fairly easy to use (once you get used to it) and would probably be quite a bit faster than doing a full 3D object track and modeling and texturing a mesh, etc..

Hopefully, someone else with more experience in this area can chime in and give a little more help than I can. Good luck!

It sounds like your 3DS Max camera position in your 3d scene may be far off from the default AE camera position, OR AE is just misinterpreting it that way. Check the x,y,z position of the 3DS camera that AE generates from your RPF file against a default AE camera. Also check the position of the new text layer. I would guess the text layer is right where it’s supposed to be. Check the camera coordinates inside of your 3DS Max scene and see what they are there as well. You may be able to just reposition the camera in 3DS.

As a workaround, you could probably create a null in AE, make it 3D, copy/paste the camera position to the null position, parent all of your 3DS assets including the camera to the null and then type in the normal x,y,z position that a default camera would have to the null position. I haven’t tried it myself but it’s worth a shot.

You’re welcome. I’m glad to hear you got it working.

Maximize the AE window so it fills the screen by clicking the green button in the top left, then you should be able to grab the corners of the window. If for some reason that doesn’t work you can probably reset it by trashing the preferences file, but I don’t think that would be necessary.

Check that the quality switch is set to full quality and that your comp window is set to full quality and 100% zoom. Is the problem just with a certain font? Does it still occur in other comps, other projects, etc.?

You could also do like I said but use the rotobrush and just choke in the matte a little so the black lines of the shapes cover up the imperfections in the rotobrush edges. Just a thought.

One way that would give you very clean results would be to apply the effects Invert (makes the background black), Knoll UnMult (removes the black areas), and another Invert (to flip the colors back to normal) to your shape animation layer. That will leave you with just the black outline. Then add a white solid under that layer and just mask the shapes by hand and use hold keyframes so it jumps from one shape to the next. When you draw the masks, just draw right in the middle of the black outline from your shape animation so the black outline is covering the edges of the masks you draw so you don’t have to be so precise. Does that make sense?

Just google “Knoll UnMult” to get the plug-in if you don’t already have it. It’s free.

Correction, paint does respond to tablet pressure but you have to write pretty slow or it will come out looking jagged. Sorry, it’s been a while since I’ve messed with the paint effect.

Here’s the link to the UnMult plug-in
    https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/free/

I should have also mentioned that you can use the paint tool in AE to write on as well and it will animate it as you wrote it, but the brush is pretty limited in that it doesn’t taper according to tablet pressure and you’re stuck with a basic round brush.
