    Check the color mode and be sure it’s RGB and not CMYK. The layers need to be at the root level in the file, not within another layer, for AE to read them as separate elements when you import as a comp. When you import it you should have a composition, plus a folder with all of the layers, which you can double-click to open in a footage window to view. The small file size is totally normal since vector files tend to be much smaller than a similarly sized raster file like a psd. HTH

    Also, Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+W closes all open comps.

    Normally, that message only appears if your CTI (current time indicator) is at the end of the timeline OR if the beginning and end points of your workspace are set to the same time and you have “From Current Time” unchecked in the RAM preview options. If none of those apply then try a fresh comp and/or project and see if it persists. If so, you might try trashing the preferences file and restarting AE.

    Update:
    Tried this on an HP laptop with a Quadro FX 1800M and it works great.

    CPU = Painful
    GPU = Wow!

    AE is probably not the right software for the type of animation you are trying to achieve. You might consider something like Toon Boom if you’re going to do a lot of cartoon animation. You could try using the puppet tool in AE to get the stretching effect, but I think it would be difficult to use on a rigged character.

    Yeah, I think that may be the best/only option.

    PSB is not supported in AE as far as I know. Could you just save a copy as a flattened PSD, PNG, JPG, etc. each time you change out the layers and just import that instead?

    Search google for “after effects character rigging” and you’ll find a lot of info. There’s a script called RigIt that rigs the character and creates a layer with controls.

    I hear ya, but in the meantime maybe you could pick up a GTX 460 or similar GeForce card? They’re pretty reasonable compared to a quadro(about $140 and up) and seem to work very well. If you plan to use the ray-tracing and/or Premiere much then it seems like it would be worth it. Just a thought…

    Yeah, it looks like they just made a mistake. I left a comment on the page so hopefully they’ll get it corrected.
