Flash 8 supports alpha. On2 Technologies has a great little Flash 8 exporter plugin for AE. https://www.on2technology.com/
I just spent a week exporting 100+ little clips, in which I chromakeyed an actor out of a background, repositioned him in a specific size window, then exported out to flash 8 with the “preserve transparancy” option checked. All these clips were then sent to media company that is incorporating them into an online flash based training they are building in flash.

Oddly enough this guy had the exact same problem with DVDlab pro. He apparently was also using shrink and then burning the disc with Nero. Are you using any of those to create your disc?

Again, it my be just the behavior or limitation of that particuliar DVD player when dealing with 16×9 anamorphic material. It looks like from your clip, that it is behaving properly with the video streams (the transitions between menus) and handling it improperly on the menus. With 16×9 menus and timelines, on a 4×3 set both should be letterboxed with DVD player generated black.
I’d see if the behavior is the same with a software DVD player on the computer and try a different set top player. You might try resetting your DVD player back to factory defaults…and looking through the set up to see what options you have when dealing with 16×9 material when the player is hooked to a 4×3 set.

What are you viewing this on that is showing the white letterboxing?
Here’s what I’m getting at. If you have 16×9 anamorphic content on DVD and the flags are set appropriately, etc… when playing the DVD on a set top dvd player attached to a 4×3 TV, the *player* is responsible for generating the letterboxing material around the image (since that material doesn’t actually exist on the DVD). That being said, this is going to vary from DVD player to DVD player, and my guess is that some DVD players have the option to customize this (various colors other than the normal super black) or to set it not to generate it at all.

When played back with a software DVD player on a computer, there should be no bars (or nearly none depending on AR) and the player window should be a nice widescreen width.

This has happened to me twice.
Once, Started the Avid up got the error and then discovered to my surprise that the dongle was missing…stolen to be exact.
The second time, I had your same situation. Dongle plugged in, everything was in order days before, one morning I get the no dongle. A quick search of the Avid support knowledge base turns up a dozen articles on troublshooting the error. Boiled down, the sentinel driver can occassionally become corrupted and need to be re-installed. I downloaded an updated one from the site recommend in this Avid knowledge base article:

The answer to your second question is “yes”. Many DVD players have audio setup options to automatically select the audio stream with the most channels. There are also options to automatically choose language and subtitles to a preferred language (if available).
I also think that the majority of commercial studio titles author 5.1 as the default audio stream….most DVD players also downmix 5.1 to 2ch for stereo only setups (there are usually options for that as well). Some people may prefer a proper 2ch mix, if so they can choose it from a setup menu on the disc as you suggest.
