Completely missing my point!
The point is, only Apple software needs to be upgraded to run on the new G5 machines. We are being gouged. Adobe, Newtek, Maya- all of their software runs fine with no modification to the application. Other NLE manufactures software will run on old crusty machines, or conversely, new shiny machines. Of course the new shiny machines run much better- that is expected. Anyone remembe the Dane Hack for FCP 3? A person found out that Apple had put in a software limiter in the code for “real time “FCP. By exploiting that code real ime performance was acheived on unqualified systems. What happened- Apple threatened the guy with jail time for doing this. What if Chevy, or Honda threatened all these hot rodders that modify their cars? It is just that the broken promises and elitism are beginning do drag me down. This is a huge slap in the face for an Apple poster boy. I am beginning to see through the thin veil of market exploitation by way of producing slick looking software that runs like cr*p. This is all a shell game.

Apple steered me wrong. On Apples own admition, the new G5 will not work with previous versions of FCP(4, 4.5, 4.5 HD) only FCP 5! The reason Apple give is that the “old” FCP does not support the “new” graphics cards! In contrast, AE 6.5 and Lightwave do support the new hardware. How can Apple with a clear conscience do this?

Try to find a special effects or video reseller in your area, or a friend who owns a workstation or upper end P4 pc made within the last few years. The responsiveness of just moving the cursor will be like instsant gratification. Like I said I have been a Mac devote since the early days. I was raised on the Apple IIe and so on. Anyone remember the game Oregon Trail? I had the unfortunate task of using After Effects on a PC and I was blown away! Things have not evened out, no matter how much marketing you “feel” you need to believe. Why do you think Apple is going to “the Dark Side”? Apple has based most of their marketing towards the emotional side of things. Win XP Pro is super stable and super customizable(turn off drop shadows, change colors to the interface, whatever you want- it is OPEN). I really like how After Effects and Lightwave can run on the new G5 Dual Cores, but for some uncanny reason only FCP 5 will run on them. Why is it that the new FCP can work on old machines but old FCP cannot work on new machines but other old software that relies on the same graphics technology will work on both? = shell game for cash or = a code blockade.

Apple will abondon you once they get your cash. I want to get a new G5, but in order to do that I will need to upgrade to the latest version of FCP Studio=$699 more than the cost of a new G5! I have learned the hard way that Apple is just a marketing company(brilliant marketing) and little else. Most of their software is actually PC based and ported over to the Mac OS(Shake, FCP, Live Type, etc…). Most software starts on the PC and then gets hacked to work on OSX, look at Maya, Lightwave, After Effects, Illustrator, Etc…These programs are responsive and have the features to make them truley usable on the PC platform (in a fast production environment). If you have the time to wait around, use a mac. OSX is a beautifull interface, but it is crippled by patch, after patch, after patch. I seriously urge anyone to experience the snappiness of a proper PC with photoshop or any of the above programs. I switched and could not believe how foolish I “felt” with my $20,000 worth of crippled software and hardware. I was hoping that the new G5 would get Apple back in line with PC hardware. Now Steve Jobs wants another $699 and another OS upgrade. This post is open for flaming now. I am thouroghly disgusted by Apple now. No Apple does not have your back- sadley they have your mind as well as your wallet.

I think you can gain better control over the limited default settings by setting your own parameters for the slider. I believe you control or right click (or something like that) on the depth number then you can set your own range. Set it for something like 0-1 instead of 0-100. You should then be able to slide uber small increments! I know that Lightwave exports Z-buffer data that AE interprets differently than expected.This trick makes setting up motion blur much better in AE(faster render than LW too).

Yeah, I know what you are saying. I have made the “switch” back to PC from a previous indentured servitude to the mac platform. I am just counting the years when I can safely go back to the mac platform. I am into 3d and lots of AE work now and the mac is just too slow, no Open GL 2.o support etc…. Steve Jobs turns mac into a never ending hardware upgrade model. A small fact, if I want a new G5, I will have to upgrade most of my mac software because the Jobs has discontinued support for all previous versions of FCP for sure. We will have to wait and see if AE and PS will have to be updated as well. Hmm…the age old flame bait question…PC or Mac?

Thanks for the quick response Stove, how does a person arrive at the beginning of the last frame elegantly. I just figured it worked like everything else, you know, push the end key. Is it a two step process? Do you have any other quick tips for PPro? Something on the Cow would be great, like a “Things you didn’t know but should in PPro”. How does a person achieve “modes” like overlay or addition or multiply to composite tracks in PPro? I WANNA KNOW! Only if you know.

I agree 100%. The lack of “real” pro features in PPro has made me stop using it altogether. I keep coming back to this forum to see if anything has happened that would make this a worthwhile program-NOPE! You should check out the keyframing in PPro = a complete mess. Sorry to rant, er, no I’m not, I payed a lot of money for this slap-stick software. Whatever. Maybe in the future we will have dual mono audio and end of clip visibility while keyframing(it is black now).

If you look at Madia Center in MyComputer/Properties you will see that it says XP Pro. What is up with this?
