Motion can do alot for a presentation in terms of animation, but it isn’t really a presentation tool. A combo of motion and keynote can do you some really cool things.

If you’re going portable I’d opt for the MacBook Pro.

It’s basically like PAL SD-fotage is 720×576 “native square” but actaully plays back at 768×576, or anamophic PAL which is the same 720×576 resolution, but plays back at 1024×576 pixles.

I’m not 100% sure about this, but DVCPR HD 720p probably is non-square HD just like 1080i DVCPROHD is

Just thought I could pass on a link to some G5 Quad Tests:

    https://www.fcpug.se/forum/showthread.php?t=308

Even-though it’s a Swedish MUG the test is written in English.

Simply put: the Quad is FAST.

    Enjoy!

I reckon native IMX can’t be captured in FCP, only edited. I might be wrong, but I think you have to capture the MXF media through a seperate app and then conform it to work in FCP. I don’t know if the Blackmagic card handles it either. AJA just got support for it, again I think, in a recent software update.

We’ll I can tell you that I’ve experience similare speed-increases as Walter, if not more. I don’t have all the figures in front of me but here are a few:

    20s Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 HD to MPEG2 HD (1-PASS VBR + AIFF Audio)
    Dual Core 2.3 G5: 68s
    Quad Core 2.5 G5: 42s

    3x20s Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 SD to MPEG2 SD (1-PASS VBR + AC3 Audio)
    Dual CPU 500Mhz G4: 300s
    Dual CPU 2.5 G5: 70s
    Quad Core 2.5 G5: 37s

    That’s what I call a GOOD speed-up!

In After Effects I’ve gone from little over five hours to below two hours in rendering speed (Dual Core 2.3 vs Quad 2.5). With-out the NUCLEO plugin I was at about 7 hours on the same sequence

I reckon this is one of the strangest problems Apple has done for it self. I just don’t get how they can be so stupid. Perhaps this is temporary untill the next version av Final Cut Studio comes? We can all hope

QuickTime reads SWF up to Flash 5 or 6, at least on the Mac, so After Effects should be able to read it to.

    Well, perhaps

  • I did some ending credits last fall and tried both the good old photoshop PSD > After Effects or Motion and actually typing the text in AE/Motion. Renderingspeeds wore about 10X faster with PSD > AE than anything else.

Motions doesn’t handle large files very well – they seem to choke to GPU or something. Also, writing text IN the apps makes them have to rasterize everything, every frame. Takes alot of CPU/GPU for that.

But someone might have a magic way of doing it?
