    You could try to do it in After Effects.
    In my opinion AE has a much better scaling algorithm than FCP.
    Keep an eye on the fields though and always check in a video monitor.

    If it’s a widescreen filter you want to apply, you can make a still in photoshop with an alpha channel.
    Import that into FCP and put it on a track above the rest of the clips.
    I’ve also just converted to FCP and I love it, but this is one thing I really miss.

    You cuold get more material by slowing one or both clips down a bit, or add a freeze frame, or…
    There are many ways to skin a horse 😉

    I’m sorry to say, but AVID doesn’t support the AVR codecs in OSX.
    You could install them in OS9 as a workaround though.

    I’m soo happy we made the switch to FCP!
