There is no -20 setting on the camera because Canon wants a -12 reference to cover the inherent noise of the electronics in the camera. If you can record a true -20 tone on what ever media the camera takes and play it back in the camera you can see exactly where -20 shows up on the meters.

Not sure what “way low” means but your camera level should be set at -20 from a “0” tone from the mixer.

Can I confirm? No, you have to do your home work so you’ll understand what the H4N can & cannot do. Find an H4N users group ask questions there, get involved with other users. Read the specs & features on the units webpage if the answers you seek are not there then call the company and speak to tech support. That’s the only way to learn.

A directional lav mic can lead to problems. It’s more prone to P pops, breath blasts and most important, head turns by the talent that makes them sound way off mic. Be safe, get an omni lav, the Countryman EMW would be a very good choice IMO.
A dynamic stick mic would be my choice because it gives you the option to use it wireless with a plug on transmitter. Condenser mics used as stick mics require 48v phantom power which is fine if you’re hard wired to an input that can supply 48vp.
Using the condenser as a wireless could be a problem since you’ll need a tx that can supply 48vp. OTOH there are a few battery powered condensers that will solve the tx issue. For a dynamic the Electro Voice RE 50 is the defacto standard for on camera use. Also look at the stick mics (hand held) from Sennheiser & Beyer.
BTW an omni stick mic is better for hand held use as it’s more forgiving in the hands of someone not used to using a HH mic.

Surprise, the answer is YES but you’ll need an outboard mixer or preamp. Checkout Beachtek or juicedlink. They’re used for cameras but should do the job you need done. OTOH if extra gear is a hassle then get the Zoom H4N.

Don’t know of any unit that will reverse but there are a number of auto mixers that mute/fade the unused channels. I use the Shure SC810 8 input rack mount unit that works very well for conference type projects. Street price is about $1250 at B&Hphotovideo.com.

Getting rid of the coil section on the 7506 can be done. Cut the cord at the top of the coil section and splice in a section of straight cable of what ever length you want. Add a 3.5 mm TRS plug and you’re done. Not to be attempted by those who don’t know how to solder the Sony Litz wire.
A couple of TA-3 M&F connectors at the cut point makes for a professional looking attachment and more durable connection.

You don’t want to use any type of monitor that will give you a false sense of what you’re hearing. We use HP’s on a shoot because we have to, not because they’re the best choice for the job. I’ve found the 7506 to have a lot of sizzle but no steak.

You’re correct. Sennheiser obviously raised the price to $799 for the 3 pc set fairly recently.
