The timeline interface is only slightly important because that’s what I’m used to from working in NLEs, and I think I would have a better feel for things using a timeline. But it is not a necessity, just a preference. So if Playback Pro is the way to go, I’m sure I can adapt. I’ll download the demo and give it a shot.

Yes, I tried turning off OpenGL, but it didn’t help. I just discovered that there is a new update to AE, Premiere and other CS4 programs. I’m downloading it right now, and hopefully the update will fix this. But the fact that I haven’t heard of anyone else having this problem makes me doubtful. But we’ll see.. I’ll post back when I have the updates installed.

Yea my first thought was that one ore more other layers were affecting the fractal layer, which is why I tried starting a brand new project with nothing in it but the fractal layer. But it’s happening there as well. Crazy stuff! Could it have anything to do with my graphics card? I just upgraded to a Quadro FX 3700. I don’t know if it matters, but this workstation (HP xw9300, 2 dual Opterons, 4 Gb Ram) is a Matrox Axio.
So: Any other ideas what I might look at? This just doesn’t make any sense. I found a workaround for now: Trimming the fractal layers where the animation freezes, duplicating it and sequencing it with dissolves, but it don’t look great! 🙁

Yeah, I’ve looked at them before (they do have a lot of cool stuff), and other stock footage companies, but they don’t have what I’m looking for. I have found some stuff which is not 25 fps 16:9 / widescreen, but I have not had any success so far finding what I need.

I have to leave work now, but when I get back I’m going to try to parent the layers in the copied comps to the layers in the main comp, so that I can make adjustments to the animation and see my black intersections follow immediately.

Hold down the ctrl key and click on the keyframe(s). You may have to click on it more than once, since it cycles through different interpolation methods. You’ll see the diamond shaped keyframe appear when it’s back to “normal”.

Sounds like you could precompose the logo-reveal, then bring that precomp into your 3D comp, meke it 3D and have it cast shadows. Should only show shadows of the revealed part.

You can split the layer where you want the effect to no longer be applied, and only apply the effect to the first part of the split.

Not sure why you aren’t getting the trimmed clip(s) when you paste into AE. The only thing I can think of suggesting is to make sure that you actually have the trimmed clip(s) in the timeline highlighted/selected when you copy. In other words, don’t have the untrimmed clip(s) in the project panel selected when you copy.
As far as the other issue, I can probably offer more help: The thing is that just because you apply changes in AE, doesn’t mean you can just copy those layers and paste them into Premiere with the changes showing up. Here’s 2 different workflows that will work:
1. (Must be CS3 or later) Save your AE project after you do the changes. In PP, import the AE composition by importing AE project and selecting composition. The AE composition will show up as a layer in the PP timeline. It will most likely not play in realtime; you’ll have to render it. But it makes it easy to go back and forth between AE and PP and make adjustments
2. Render a movie/clip from AE with the changes, and import it into Premiere.Hope this helps,
