This should be the first thing taught in videography 101, especially now that we’ve got people born in the digital age. One of the most baffling concepts for me to understand was why anyone would go to so much trouble (pulldown) to get a “film look.” What makes the film look so special? I’m not saying there’s no aesthetic quality- clearly there is or people wouldn’t go to the trouble, but it really helps to know the historical/cultural context of 24p rather than just taking it for granted. It’s awesome that we’ve got cameras that can do it for less than the cost of a Porshe, but I wonder how much of our love for the “film look” is a result of social conditioning. Basically, we associate video with cheap (and therefore poor) and film with high budget (and therefore quality) so before we even get past the titles we’re biased. Gotta go out and get a 24p cam and add instant quality! But you know what… call me a Pavlov’s dog but I’ll be damned if I don’t eat it up- hook line and sinker. I see 60i and the crap colored glasses snap into place immediately. It’ll be interesting to see what movies look like in 15 years.
