DSR-11 heads access?
Apologies for off-topic post, but most FCP editors seem to have experience with the DSR-11. After isolating dirty heads on a deck that the Sony Cleaning Cassette did not solve, I went to manually clean the heads with a head swab & cleaning solution. When I opened the case, I could not see any easy access to the heads. What gives? Anyone out there have a SOP, short of disassembling the entire deck or sending it out for service?

yeah kind of tough to get to the heads, possible though. these decks can be a little touchy. great product for the price, but if you can’t get it to work you’ll have to send it in. try playing another tape, recording and playing a tape etc. many times, it’s just a client tape that just won’t play…

also try blowing out the insides with a can of air. last time I did this a half a dozen tiny strips of dv tape came blowing out! partially shredded masters over the years? this is a consumer format after all…

The DSR-11 is a nightmare for that. Tree times I’ve got a tape stuck inside, and the tree times I had to send it to Sony to extract the tape.

some dsr 11 decks are better than others. we have been very lucky with ours. maybe not very good quality control from sony?

Mine jammed a few times during tape loading when I 1st got it and I was able to remove the shroud and dig out the tape with no damage. After that I learned to always feed the tapes straight in and not let one side get in front of the other side. It hasn’t jammed for years this way. Full size tapes were the worst.
Be EXTREMELY careful cleaning heads with a cotton swab, they are very delicate and easy to damage.

I clean the heads on my DSR11 all the time. Remove the top of the case. Looking down on the DSR11 you will see the tape loading mechanism. There are two small screws that hold it in place. Remove them and very gently fold the mechanism back. You will have access to the head now.

Many thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences, and thank you Bill for the tip. I had tried the four larger screws on top with no success, but had looked over the two smaller screws (it’s always the thing you don’t try, isn’t it?). If a delicate head cleaning fails me, off to Sony it goes!

What’s the best solution to use to do this, and what type of swaps? I think my heads are clogged. I’ve had to clean it every other time I use it lately and captures inconsistent.

I found what I was looking for, chamois swabs and 99.9% Isopropyl.
