30p-24p what the ?
Posted by Arty Gold on August 12, 2006 at 1:47 pmhey i just got finished doing a shoot for a show and they shoot on 30p
after changing all the setting in my camera…
and doing the shoot
i noticed that there was little difference to me between 30p and 24p…
so my question is what is the real difference,,,and is one better to use than the other ?i have been using 24p exclusively but now i’m wondering if that’s wrong.
thanks for any advice

August 12, 2006 at 5:07 pmIt’s a question of taste. To me personally 30p looks like video with a high speed shutter while 24p looks like film.

August 13, 2006 at 12:33 amthanks !
that’s my opinion as well…i asked the executive producer why they shoot 30p instead of 24p but he said he doesn’t know why…i guess i just wanted to make sure i wasn’t doing anything stupid…but i think i’ll stay 24p.

August 13, 2006 at 4:01 pmSure- but 30p must be edited at 29.97. It cannot be used in a 23.98 timeline.

but even at 24p i have to edit in a 29.97 timeline right…
i’d have to shoot in 24 p advance to edit in a 23…timeline ? -

August 14, 2006 at 12:48 am24pA with automatic pulldown removal or 24p standard with pulldown removed via CinemaTools.

August 15, 2006 at 12:26 amthat’s great information…and rather than check the validaty of it…i’m just going to take it in and accept it ! i love old school hollywood and their refusal to change their ways…costing movie prices to go over 8-9 bucks a ticket !
so the real question i’m left asking is i shoot on 24p 0r 30p…if i edit in final cut pro…it’s still a 29.97 timeline, right ? is that the standard way or am i missing something here.

August 15, 2006 at 2:44 amNo it depends what your finish will be. If it’s a filmout or a native 24p DVD you can edit only 24p on a 23.98 timeline. 30p is always on a 29,97 timeline. You can also edit 24p or 24pA on a 29.97 timeline by not removing the pulldown. If you still don’t track, read all of this:

August 15, 2006 at 2:46 amConsidering most 24p cameras used by major film studios like the Sony F900 and Panavision Genesis cost as much or more than their 35mm equivalents for a daily rental- I have a hard time agreeing with you on the ‘cheaping out’ part.
