Transitions are tricky to do and better left to spec level authoring tools – The reason your getting a black is because the player must “switch” from one domain to another.

There are some great books on creating menus for DVD – do a google search.
Dont rely on a authoring app to do menus. This kind of work should be done in Photoshop or another graphics program.

Authoring DVDs is like any other part of production – editing, shooting, writing ect. Trail and error is a must – keep at it and good luck.

It all really depends on what kind of authoring your going to be doing. Why do you feel DVDLab would be better positioned to author DVDs? Are you going to use alot of scripting? What exactly are you going to author. Games? Reels? Feature Films?

Encore is great for most work – and it has a built in preview. But DVDlab provides more access to the DVD spec like writing and extracting values from GPRMs and SPRMs. Ask yourself whats more important.

Studio Pro can author HD-DVD (no Blu-Ray, Yet) disc that do play on the new Toshiba Systems. But there have been some problems with the overlays.

Sonic has platforms for both standards which will set you back several 10s of thousands of $.

Wait till after NAB to see where we go from here.

I don’t think encore will author HD DVDs? – could be wrong?

Its good to be prepared right now but its a little to soon to start authoring discs at this point – players aren’t even really available.

When you hit “stop” it does just that – stops from playing the disc. This is a DVD thing not a problem on your part. There is really no work around on this. Use the menu buttons – thats what they’re for.

You really cant “pre-record” a DVD. It either contains a VIDEO_TS folder or it does not. That Pioneer deck will “hold” your promo for you until you send it the next persons jump and press “finalize”. At this point it will mux the DVD.

Another thing to consider is that you want to show the person thier jump when the adrenaline is flowing 🙂 An AVI or mov. clip from a camera source that can be easliy accessed is a great way of doing this. If they like it – pop it in the authoring app and burn.

You need to finalize the 2 together unless maybe you want to invest in that $5000 recorder. DVD-RW makes no difference on time. What about doing the work on a laptop at the top of the tower? You could press play on the camera, the clip appear on your desktop, then drop it into you authoring app.

The only real solution I see hear is to use a simple authoring app like DVDit. The only problem lies in how and how fast that clip from the camera can get onto a computer HDD the fastest.

You would need to drop your overlay into the subpicture track then adjust the point you want it to appear.
